Warwick Davis on Flitwick’s Appearance Change

Warwick DavisWarwick Davis, who portrays Professor Flitwick and Griphook in the Harry Potter films, explained on his Twitter account why Flitwick’s appearance changed from the first two films to the rest of the films.  In Prisoner of Azkaban, the producers still wanted him in the film, even though the character wasn’t in the script.  Therefore, they put him in as ‘Choir Master.’  And then Mike Newell, director of Goblet of Fire, liked the look, and stuck with it.

RT @fjmosca “Could you possibly give us an insight as to why Flitwick’s look was changed for the third HP movie?” @WarwickADavis Yes…
…So many of you have asked me the ‘New look Flitwick’ question, so I will answer it here, once and for all. When it came time to shoot…
…’Azkaban’, there was no mention of ‘Flitwick” in the script. However, the producer still wanted me to be in the movie…
…so he asked if I would play the role of ‘Choir Master’. Of course, I said ‘yes’. When it came time to shoot ‘Goblet of Fire’…
…the director, Michael Newell said he liked the look of the choir master, and from that moment, the character became known as ‘Flitwick’.
And that’s all there is to it. Not that interesting really, is it?

  1. I rather fancy the idea that Flitwick was experimenting with highly advanced magic between the 2d and 3d school years, and got caught in a magical backfire that stripped about 40-50 years off his age. Since he liked the result, he refused to have it undone.

  2. Maven, I like your answer.

  3. Preposterous! Magical backfiring rarely happens.

  4. I don’t mind that he changed appearance. Both looks matched the character and like Maven said in a magical world anything is possible really. Wizards as skilled as Flitwick would have no trouble changing their appearance at will. For all we know Flitwick really looks like the first films and made himself more youthful looking with a charm or visa versa (made himself appear older in first films).
