February 2010 Calendar: Hermione’s Bag

Posted by Dijares On January - 31 - 2010

Harry Potter's PageFebruary 2010’s desktop calendar is Hermione’s bag from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. As many of you recall, she had that magical bag that she could fit hundreds of things into and no one would ever know from looking at it from the outside (I wish I had one of those!).  Crmhpfan has included on this wonderful calender many items from Hermione’s bag, including jeans, socks, a corner of Phineas Nigellus Black’s portrait, a book, and, of course, the calendar.  The calender also includes character’s birthdays (which is something that Crmhpfan wants to do from here on out).  There are more items as well, but I’ll leave them for you to find.

After clicking on the size that you want, right click on the calendar, and click ’set as background’ for IE, or ’set as desktop desktop background’ for Firefox.

Thanks to Crmhpfan for doing such a wonderful job on this month’s calendar! She is truly a master! :)

Video & First Look at LEGO Harry Potter Years 1 - 4

Posted by Dijares On January - 29 - 2010

LEGO Harry Potter Years 1 - 4IGN have posted an article that is a first look at the LEGO Harry Potter Years 1 - 4 video game.  The article gives many kudos to the game, stating it’s slick and colorful.  The writer, Greg Miller, also stated the game feels more like a traditional game than any of the LEGO games he’s played before.

…you’re going to play through the events of Harry’s first four years at Hogwarts, covering the events of Sorcerer’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, and Goblet of Fire. As you do, you’re going to mature just like the young wizard. You’ll need to go to classes to learn spells, those spells will get more and more powerful as you keep studying, and you’ll gain access to otherwise inaccessible parts of Hogwarts as the years go by.

Basically, you’re playing Harry’s life… but it’s all told via LEGO blocks.

The article also includes six new screen shots from the game and a new trailer.  You can see the screen shots in our gallery beginning here.

Dobby: Downtrodden Yet Inspiring

Posted by Lilysowl On January - 29 - 2010

Dobby the House ElfEmpireOnline posted a photo gallery of the “Most Downtrodden(Yet Inspiring) Characters In Movie History”.  Dobby, a character created by J.K. Rowling who wrote the Harry Potter series, was number 8.  The house elf was introduced to moviegoers in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets:

Dobby
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)

Why he’s so miserable: It may have been largely excised from the filmed versions, but in the Harry Potter universe house elves like Dobby are essentially slaves, in that they work without pay and without possibility of release except by their master’s say-so. That may be alright if you work somewhere fairly cuddly, like the Hogwarts kitchens (where the elves are largely bemused by Hermione and her Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare), but if you work for the Malfoys you can count on regular beatings, semi-starvation, verbal abuse and having to cater to dark wizards.

Why he’s inspiring: Dobby’s best efforts quite often bring disaster on their intended beneficiary (usually Harry Potter), but you can’t fault him for doing everything he can to protect The Boy Who Lived from a clear and present danger - and he does it at considerable risk to himself. Dobby continues to play a heroic role throughout the series, always putting the welfare of others before his own, and plays a role out of all proportion to his size.

Other characters in the photo gallery include Napoleon Dynamite and Wall-E.

Nicholas Hooper & HBP Soundtrack Giveaway

Posted by Lilysowl On January - 29 - 2010

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood PrinceThis afternoon, I received my  January email  issue of the official Harry Potter newsletter from Warner Bros.  In recognition of the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince soundtrack being nominated for a Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media, there is an interview with the composer Nicholas Hooper in the newsletter.

He mentions his favorite scene to score was Harry and Dumbledore’s journey to the cave.  The “Unbreakable Vow” scene with Snape, Bellatrix, and Narcissa was one of the difficult scenes to score.  Hooper admits there are musical reminiscents to his musical composition for Order of The Phoenix because his intention was to show a connection between the two movies.  For example, “Umbridge Theme” in Order of the Phoenix and “Living Death” in Half-Blood Prince are similar because Professor Umbridge and Professor Slughorn were new teachers: “How Will Slughorn turn out?  Can we trust him?”

Click here to subscribe to the newsletter and read the complete interview.

Once you subscribe, you’re eligible for a free mp3 dowload of “Friends and Love” from the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince soundtrack.  And if you follow @harrypotterfilm on Twitter this weekend, you will have a chance to win the soundtrack!

Another way to receive a free Half-Blood Prince soundtrack is to purchase the Harry Potter Years 1-6 Blu-ray Gift Set at WBshop.com  Click here for more information.

Wizarding World of Harry PotterThe National Football League’s Super Bowl XLIV is scheduled for next Sunday, February 7th at 6PM ET on CBS, and, as many of you know, it’s not just football that fans want to see; it’s the commercials, too.  Now Harry Potter fans have a reason (or another reason) to watch the Super Bowl this year.  According to the Media Decoder blog on the New York Times, a commercial spot for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter will air during the biggest game of the year.

Update5: WWoHP 3D Peek & Interviews

Posted by Dijares On January - 28 - 2010

Wizarding World of Harry PotterWe previously told you that today’s USA Today would give you 3D peek of Universal Studios, Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  You can take the printed map and rotate it in front of your webcam and get a closer look at the entire area from all sides and angles using augmented-reality technology.  You’ll get to see Hogwarts, Hogsmeade village, where the Hogwarts Express arrived, and even blow on your computer’s microphone to make the banners wave.

Also, USA Today have a video online showing how to make the map come to life (thanks to UHP). Check it out here!

UPDATE: Universal Studios, Orlando, have updated their site with a release on what all will be included in Ollivander’s.

Visitors to the Ollivanders wand shop at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will step into one of the most iconic scenes from the bestselling Harry Potter books and blockbuster feature films. With the assistance of a live actor, along with amazing special effects, guests of Ollivanders will get to experience the same type of magical moment Harry had in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” when a wand ”chooses them.”

You can see artwork of the shop in our gallery here (thanks to HPANA).

UPDATE 2: You can now print out a version of the map from USA Today.  Go here to print out your map!

UPDATE 3: Okay, I just got through going through my very own 3D Wizarding World of Harry Potter experience!  It was soooo awesome!  Make sure to go get your map here, and then go here to start the fun!

UPDATE 4: A phone conference was held this morning with Universal Studios Orlando’s Vice President of Creative Development, Thierry Coup, and many Harry Potter websites.  We have some notes for you from the phone conference (thanks to SS).

• Ollivander’s is set up so that it has an air of being around forever; you will be greeted by the wandmaker (not Ollivander, but working for him at Hogsmeade); you’ll walk in the shop, see stacks and shelves of wand boxes at numerous levels. It’s very intimate inside the shop, and very tall, according to Coup. Stuart Craig will be creating some of the wands, approved by J.K. Rowling. The wand will choose the wizard who owns it, which will be done by special and unique processes (though no detail yet). There will be a wand fitting, and if it doesn’t work out, there will be interesting effects, including flowers wilting and lightning at all angles of the shop itself. You will know that the wand you chose won’t be yours. If the right wand does choose you, you will have the option to choose it or not. There are 13 different types of wand wood for the choosing, which are unique to the shop; children will have their own special wands, too.
• At Dervish and Banges, there will be wand accessories that can be bought (though sadly can’t be revealed now).
• The wand choosing process can take up to two minutes at least to much more. Pricing range has not been determined; the wand choosing itself won’t be charged, just the wand itself.
• There will be wands from some of the main characters wands - hero wands - including in sets; this is different to personal wands that will be chosen for wizards.
• As for the shops in Hogsmeade, they are near completion, but there are still “final touches” to them.
• Hogwarts Castle, from the exterior, is “very large.” Iconic rooms, such as Dumbledore’s office, the Dark Arts classroom, and the Great Hall, amongst others.
• Many props were chosen from the Harry Potter film sets, such as the Flying Ford Anglia (which sadly did not fly).
• Owl shop and Dervish and Banges are the smallest, Ollivanders is slightly larger, and Zonko’s joke shop is the largest. There are no queues to get into the shops, despite being attractions as well as shops.
• There are plans of expansion within the park, and will include many more attraction sites (though no further word has been stated on this).
• The shops will be as close to the films’ version as possible (as shown by the early Ollivanders shop photos). Coup and the rest of his creative team opted to make it as faithful to the original project as possible.

UPDATE 5: Audio of the the phone conference with Universal Studios, Orlando, is now online. You listen below (thanks to SS):

Thanks so much to Universal Studios, Orlando, for all of this fun!
