This afternoon, I received my January email issue of the official Harry Potter newsletter from Warner Bros. In recognition of the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince soundtrack being nominated for a Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media, there is an interview with the composer Nicholas Hooper in the newsletter.
He mentions his favorite scene to score was Harry and Dumbledore’s journey to the cave. The “Unbreakable Vow” scene with Snape, Bellatrix, and Narcissa was one of the difficult scenes to score. Hooper admits there are musical reminiscents to his musical composition for Order of The Phoenix because his intention was to show a connection between the two movies. For example, “Umbridge Theme” in Order of the Phoenix and “Living Death” in Half-Blood Prince are similar because Professor Umbridge and Professor Slughorn were new teachers: “How Will Slughorn turn out? Can we trust him?”
