Behind The Scenes: Deathly Hallows Animated Sequence

Posted by Lilysowl On January - 29 - 2011

Since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 was recently nominated for an Oscar in the Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects categories,  The Los Angeles Times interviewed Ben Hibon who was the animation director for the animated sequence of  “The Tale of The Three Brothers” (which introduces the Deathly Hallows) read by Emma Watson as “Hermione Granger”.

Here is an excerpt of what Mr. Hibon was quoted to have said about putting the animation together:

“This is the first animated sequence ever to appear in a Harry Potter film, so it had to be distinctive and special. It’s not animation as we might think of it today; it is a moving illustration of the story being read aloud by Hermione — the story of the Deathly Hallows. The fact that the sequence would be explaining the origin of the title made it all the more important.

“In a moment that takes our central characters to a world of ancient fables, the titular tale of the Three Brothers, found in the book ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard,’ has an eerie undertone, reminiscent of the timeless Grimms’ fairy tales, which I found particularly relevant for us. Although they are labeled as ‘children’s tales,’ they often tell stories of dark kingdoms and sinister characters. We wanted the audience to experience the story as if through the imagination of a young child…”

Hibon went on to say how the style of the animation was also inspired by the work of  artist Lotte Reiniger  from the 1930s and the style of the Asian shadow-play “which is visually striking, very intricate and yet so beautifully simple”.

Body Bind Curse Is Evanna Lynch’s Bogart

Posted by Lilysowl On January - 22 - 2011

It may not make sense but yet that is what Evanna Lynch claims in a blog she wrote for The Harry Potter Alliance.  In the blog, the actress who portrayed “Luna Lovegood” in the Harry Potter films expressed her feelings on how important it is to have a good self-image of ourselves and do what we can to maintain our bodies and minds.

I don’t believe in mental blocks. I don’t believe in what other people tell me I can and can’t do. Basically, I have very little regard for the idea of “can’t”. Take the example of running a marathon: your mind tells you that you can’t do it, and other people may laugh and scoff when you tell them your ambition. But the truth of the matter is these statements are just illusions. You can run the marathon regardless of the naysayers. However, if you break both legs two days before the aforementioned marathon I don’t think anyone will contest that “can’t” becomes the cold hard truth.

This reality is why the physical body bind is my greatest fear and it is also why I think it’s so important that we love and care for our bodies as best as we can. It’s true that the mind is where all ideas are born, but the body is the tool that translates and expresses those ideas to the wider world. It is nothing but a vehicle for our greater creative purpose but if we don’t give it fuel and keep it in good working order it instead becomes another obstacle to transcend, a physical one, as well as the many million fictitious mental ones that society presents.
