This weekend was a big weekend in the Harry Potter world. There was a sneak peek at Harry Potter: The Exhibition giving reporters a chance to get a look at the exhibit. There’s also the red carpet event for the DVD/Blu-ray release that includes the Harry Potter stars.
But for one fan, and our sometimes correspondent Blake Devillers, not only did she get to go to the exhibit, she also got to go see Dan in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
Here’s part of her write up which also provides links to her review of both the exhibition and Dan’s show.
A Day in the City with Harry Potter and J. Pierrepont Finch….
There are times when all the magical energy of the universe combines to create an amazing coincidence. This weekend (April 2), I found myself attending a sneak preview of ‘Harry Potter: The Exhibition’ and a matinee of How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying on the same day. It was a fantastic day and I’m sharing two reviews of my experiences.
Through my connection with HarryPottersPage.com (Thanks Dijares!) I was able to attend ‘Harry Potter: The Exhibition’ at Discovery Times Square. This is the exhibition’s last domestic stop before it heads off to international destinations. It will open to the public on April 5th and run through September 5th. If you haven’t already seen it elsewhere, you’ve GOT to go! The sheer number of props, set pieces and costumes is amazing and the detailing is fantastic. They had props from ALL the movies, including Helga Hufflepuff’s cup from the upcoming Deathly Hallows, Part 2. However, there were no photographs allowed, and since I cannot draw, I wasn’t able to get an image for you. Let me just say this, it’s smaller than I thought it would be, but VERY detailed and shiny gold with two handles (one on either side of the brim) and an interesting pattern on the bowl of the cup that looks like overlaying leaves. Although we weren’t allowed to take photos, they did give me a book as part of my press packet (which is also for sale in the gift store at the end of the exhibit), from which I took some photos/scans. You can take a look at them here, along with the rest of the photos/scans from the exhibit. For my complete report, including the top 21 items you should see if you visit, go here.
After my tour through the exhibit, I saw Dan Radcliffe in How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. I have seen many Broadway plays in my life, including Dan in Equus two years ago, and I can honestly say that he was wonderful in this updated version (from the 1961 and 1995 versions). Dan’s sense of comic timing is right on the mark, and while some critics have panned his ‘dancing chops’, I thought he embodied the wonderful quirkiness and awkwardness of his character in his dance moves. This performance was dedicated to the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids organization, and autographed playbills and posters were sold, with the money going to that charity. To read my full review go here and my autographed playbill of the show which you can find in the photo gallery here!
Thanks very much to Blake for attending this event and sharing her reports!
