Although Entertainment Weekly posted this news two days ago, I’m still gobsmacked over the fact that Eddie Redmayne (“Newt Scamander” in Fantastic Beasts And Where to Find Them) had auditioned for the role of “Tom Riddle” in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when he was a university student.
Redmayne may play the hero of Rowling’s new film, a good-natured former Hufflepuff, but in an interview with Empire, he revealed that he almost played a far more villainous role — perhaps the most villainous role in the entire series.
“I actually auditioned to play Tom Riddle when I was back at university,” Redmayne told Empire. “I properly failed and didn’t get a call back. Over the years I always hoped I might be cast as a member of the Weasley family, but unfortunately not.”
To have accumulated that much desire to be a part of J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world since then, Redmayne was destined apparently to have a lead. Isn’t it nice that his wish to be a wizard had come true? 😀
If you click here to read the article, there is a brief video interview with Redmayne and Katherine Waterston (Tina Goldstein). They mention what they would have told themselves at the start of working with their wands now that they know how to use them comfortably.
