Pottermore reported that Jude Law has been cast as the younger version of Albus Dumbledore in the next Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film. The film will take place at a time when Dumbledore was the Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts and “the contemporary of Gellert Grindelwald – the Dark wizard we met in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, played by Johnny Depp.”
Dumbledore already had been mentioned in the first Fantastic Beasts… film upon the revelation that Newt had been expelled from Hogwarts and that he had argued against the expulsion. So, of course, there was great anticipation among us, Harry Potter fans, over who will be cast as the beloved wizard in the following films. Personally, I’m very excited that Jude Law will be part of the wizarding world against Johnny Depp and pleased to know David Yates, the director of the Fantastic Beasts... films, admires the actor’s work as much as I do.
‘Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I’ve long admired and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him. I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.’
Law is well-known for his roles in such films as Wilde, Holiday and The Talented Mr. Ripley. He used that distinctive voice of his for Hugo and The Rise of the Guardians. His most current starring role was in HBO’s The Young Pope.
Filming will start this summer. This story in the five-film franchise will take the wizarding world (decades before Harry’s time at Hogwarts) into an increasingly dark period when Newt and “our other heroes” will have to decide where their allegiances lie.
The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 16, 2018.
