Harry Potter and the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's
Stone
|
|
| |
| Harry Potter and the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's
Stone, the first in the Harry Potter series, was first published
in 1997. It has seventeen chapters. The book jacket has the
following story line: Harry Potter has never played a
sport while flying on a broomstick. He's never worn a cloak
of invisibility, befriended a giant, or helped hatch a dragon.
All Harry knows is a miserable life with the Dursleys, his
horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley.
Harry's room is a tiny closet at the foot of the stairs, and
he hasn't had a birthday party in eleven years. But all that
is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by owl
messenger: a letter with an invitation to a wonderful place
he never dreamed existed. There he finds not only friends,
aerial sports, and magic around every corner, but a great
destiny that's been waiting for him . . .if Harry can survive
the encounter.
Here is a list of the chapter titles:
Chapter 1: The Boy Who Lived
Chapter 2: The Vanishing Glass
Chapter 3: The Letters from No One
Chapter 4: The Keeper of the Keys
Chapter 5: Diagon Alley
Chapter 6: The Journey from Platform Nine and Three-quarters
Chapter 7: The Sorting Hat
Chapter 8: The Potions Master

Philosopher's Stone Added to UK A-Levels
|
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone has been added to the UK's A-Level as a 'set text' exams by the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA), the UK's largest exam board.
Some education experts, however, are afraid that adding the first Harry Potter book to the exams will lose some of the A-Level's credibility because they feel that the book has not yet withstood the 'test of time'.
For the exam, students will have to study the book and write 1,200 to 1,500-word piece of coursework comparing the "approaches" of J.K. Rowling and the other writers.
For those of you unfamiliar with A-Levels, they are exams taken by students in the UK, usually in years 12 and 13, and is a General Certificate of Education qualification. It is accepted by some universities as an entrance exam. |

Christie's International Raises 36,560 Pounds for HP Books
|
At a London sale, Christie's International raised 36,560 pounds ($73,000), with fees, for 20 lots of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books which included a rare first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The book auction at Christie's South Kensington salesroom exceeded a low presale estimate of 20,000 pounds without fees.
There was concern about Christie's controls after the London-based auction house confirmed that it didn't check whether the first edition, which sold for 4,000 pounds including fees, might have been stolen. The label from the Northamptonshire Libraries & Information Services appears on the volume. Since the barcode was also on the book, Bloomberg News asked the library to run the barcode number through its database. This confirmed that the library had disposed the book in 1999.

Bloomsbury Turns 21, Publishes Special Edition of PS
|
British publisher of the Harry Potter books, Bloomsbury, is turning 21. In celebration, they are publishing many of their books in special edition paperbacks, including Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The books are to include a short question and answer section with the authors, an introduction by fellow writers, and a reading guide. For Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Alexander McCall Smith will sing the praises of the first Harry Potter book. The article does not state what J. K. Rowling had to say, or what book she will be (or if she is) contributing to. The release happens this December! |

Interview With Mary Grandpre, Harry Potter Artist
|
The artist of the Harry Potter books, Mary Grandpre, was in an interview in the "NWA World Traveller Magazine". She talks about her ideas for her sketches of the Harry Potter world and about ehr one meeting with JK Rowling.
Here's a quote:
Have you met J.K Rowling?
We met once in Chicago, and she said that my interpretations of Harry and the other characters were a lot like her initial sketches . . . . That was a really good thing to hear because it told me we were on the same track.
And a scan.
(By the way...my head is doing fine!)
