Parade Magazine Takes Turns with Rupert and Heyman

Posted by Dijares On July - 16 - 2011

Ron Weasley in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2Parade magazine have also spoken with Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) and producer David Heyman as the media continues for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.  They each spoke about the end of the film series, their personal feelings, and the future.

Here are few things they had to say.

RUPERT GRINT

It hasn’t sunk in that it’s over.
“Not entirely, no. It’s still quite a strange thing to come to terms with, just the fact that we won’t be coming back next year. It really is the end. I’m not usually sentimental with stuff like that, but it has been a huge part of our lives, and it just feels really sudden that it’s all coming to an end. This feeling of freedom is quite overwhelming.”

On letting go of Ron Weasley.
“It’s been a decade of playing the same person and a character I already felt quite close to anyway because of the books. We really have become the same person. I think it’s going to be hard to shake him out of me.”

On the most emotional scene he filmed.
“The scene after the battle, with the three of us on the bridge. It’s the moment that kind of chokes me up the most. It is just that power between me, Dan, and Emma. Every day, every week, every month, every year, we’ve come together and made these films quite intensely. It is a really intimate process, making a film. You do form this tight bond, especially this being such a unique way of growing up, we’ve all shared that. We’ll always stay in touch.”

On his highly-anticipated kiss with Emma Watson.
“We felt the pressure a little bit, because this is a moment that’s been built up for so long now, and it had to come down to this one moment. It’s a scene that wasn’t in the book, it was written for the film. And it’s not just a kiss—it’s this big, romantic moment, and it had to be believable, which I hope it is. It was a challenge. We had a laugh about it.”

On seeing the lip-lock on the big screen.
“I didn’t enjoy watching it, especially in 3-D! It’s harder watching it than doing it.”

On getting a glimpse into the future while filming the epilogue.
“It was quite satisfying at the end of the day, ripping all the makeup and stuff off and instantly becoming younger. I suppose in 20 years time I’m not going to be able to do that! It was good fun, but it’s a weird thing to get your head around.”

On his favorite Potter memory.
“My first-ever scene on the set was really cool. It was actually the last scene on the first film, when we were leaving Hogwarts on the train. It was just such a change. One week I was literally at school and reading the Potter books, and suddenly I was on the set. It was just a really overwhelming, exciting thing. I felt quite out of my depth, because I did feel like the most inexperienced person there. But it was just great to be there.”

DAVID HEYMAN

On the end of Harry Potter.
“It’s mixed feelings. I’m very excited for the audience to see the film, but at the same time there’s a sadness. I’ve been working with these people for so long, and we always knew at the end of each film that we were coming back for one more, and that’s no longer the case. So that’s quite sad. Working onHarry Potter has been the most incredible odyssey. It’s been the gift of all gifts. That being said, I’m very excited about having the time to face new challenges.”

He wasn’t originally on board with splitting Deathly Hallows into two parts.
“I thought it was a bad idea, because we hadn’t done it before. We talked about doing it on the fourth film, but we didn’t do it. But when [writer] Steve Kloves started to break down the script, it became pretty clear that there was too much there for one film, and if we were to do it in one film, we’d have to leave out so much that the whole series would be compromised. So it became pretty clear that we had to make it into two films. Then Steve called me a week or so later and said, ‘You know what? There’s almost enough here for three.’ And then he said, ‘Just kidding!’ But actually, there probably is enough.”

He’s grateful to the Potter fans.
“They’ve been so unbelievably supportive and incredibly generous. They have really allowed us the opportunity to make the films we have. They’ve been so loyal. It’s been an incredible journey, and the fans are really the reason why, because without them there would be no films.”

On the prospect of another Harry Potter film.
“I don’t see any future films. I think one of the reasons J.K. Rowling wrote the ending the way she did was to close it out. There’s no ‘Harry Goes to Business School.’ I think that would be inappropriate, and thank goodness it’s not something we’re going to be doing!”

On his favorite Potter characters.
“I like so many of the characters. I like the fact that none of the characters, other than Voldemort, are pure good or pure evil. Even Harry has his demons. That’s what makes them so rich. I like characters like Lupin, and I love Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Neville. I enjoy characters like Bellatrix, even though I don’t want to be her!”

Felton, Yates & Heyman Discuss End Of HP Films

Posted by Lilysowl On January - 7 - 2011

USA Today spoke with Harry Potter star Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), director of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2 David Yates and the producer David Heyman who commented on reaching the end of the Harry Potter films.

“The decision to split this into two was purely a creative one. By doing two, there’s more detail and more time to engage with the characters in the way that we do,” says producer David Heyman. “It allows the audience time to bring themselves to it. The audience has the time to project their own feelings and engage with the characters.”

Asked if he’s feeling nostalgic, Yates says, “I don’t think we ever took it for granted. We’d sometimes joke about what we’re going to do when it’s all over. We’ll never have this amount of resources again. We’re going to have to go back into the real world, after living in this bubble.”

“One of the greatest gifts that Jo Rowling and the whole franchise has given (the actors) is that we can really end up making a kid’s night just from saying hello,” Felton says. “I was 12 when we started shooting; 13 when it came out. I’m 23 now. It’s been a long journey.

“You don’t see people growing up, not when you’re there. It’s only when you look back at the films. … Look at Daniel! He was bloody tiny. My face was like a basketball. But those angelic features seem to have left me,” he jokes.

”The last film will be it. It’s never going to be like this again. You never take this for granted,” Heyman says. “You want to do the end justice, so there’s a little bit of anxiety.”

David Heyman, the producer of the Harry Potter films, found the time in his busy schedule (he is currently editing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2) to sit down for a interview with FirstShowing.Net.  Since the in-depth discussion was 40 minutes long, it was split into two parts.  In the first part, Mr. Heyman discusses the development of all eight films and his part in that development.  The second part is mainly about Deathly Hallows.

Heyman: HP Directors, The Deathly Hallows, The Trio

Posted by Lilysowl On November - 22 - 2010

A few weeks ago, Harry Potter fans on Facebook were asked to submit questions for David Heyman, one of the producers of the Harry Potter films.  Some of those questions and Mr. Heyman’s answers were posted on the Harry Potter Official Facebook Page.  Mr. Heyman answered what it was like to work with the different actors, which Deathly Hallows would he like to possess, and what was it like to watch the three Harry Potter stars (Daniel Radcliffe – Harry, Rupert Grint-Ron, and Emma Watson-Hermione) grow up as well as a few other questions.  Here is an excerpt:

From Facebook fan Sam Wilkes Garcia: You are one of the few people to stick with the films from beginning to end. You started the first movie, and are still here. What has it been like working with the various directors? Do you find the different visions each director has brought has helped the series’ success?

I think each director has brought something different to the series, and it has been great.

Chris started off our world, and without Chris, I wouldn’t be here.  He helped cast our actors, our three leads.  Stuart Craig designed our world, but Chris kept on saying, “Bigger, bigger, bigger!”  Not only did he create what was onscreen, but he created what was behind the screen as well, which was an environment – a family – and he made it feel very safe.  By the time we were making the film, [the books] were becoming a big hit.  The first three were on the New York Times bestseller list and the fourth was coming out, so by that point, we knew that it was a big deal, but he really encouraged us to be isolated and removed from that.  He was great.

Alfonso, I think, changed everything, but while respecting everything Chris had done.  He made the world more mature, as was appropriate for the book.  In the third book, they were becoming teenagers, so he led us into that world.  He brought a magic and maturity to it.  He was a real auteur filmmaker, and I think that really helped the series.

The fourth, Mike Newell, was the first British filmmaker, and I think you really felt its Britishness.  He made what he called a Bollywood film, funnily enough, a big entertainment, and the school felt more British than it had any time before with him, and I loved that about it.  And, also, he obviously handled the romance very sensitively.

In the fifth, we brought in David Yates, and he’s seen us through till the end, and he brought a real truthfulness.  By this point, the young children were now growing into the second part of their teenage lives, becoming more mature, more experienced as actors, and he really got them to explore the truthfulness and reality and humanity.  He has brought a real energy to the process, and especially for these past last 2 films, I think having his shorthand and his knowledge has allowed us to delve deeper into the characters and allowed us to delve into the stories.  So for me personally, it’s been really exciting, and I think we’ve struck a balance of changing director and keeping director, but I’ve learnt from each of them, and it’s been fantastic.

From Facebook fan Jorge Camacho: If you could possess one of the Deathly Hallows, which would you choose, and how would you use it?

Gosh, all of the Deathly Hallows seem to have a consequence to them.  I’m not sure I want the ultimate power that the Elder Wand gives you, and to bring people back from the dead doesn’t seem like the right thing to do.  I believe in the cycles of life and that when someone moves on, they move on. Though there are some people who have passed away who I’d love to see again.  I’d probably choose the invisibility cloak, not that people recognize me or that I’m really hiding from anybody, but there are sometimes I’d love to know what people are saying behind my back, or when I’m not there I could sneak into a room and overhear those conversations.  I think that’s probably what I would choose.

From Twitter user @didigates: How does it feel to see the actors growing up on the movie set?

It is with great pride that I look at them.  They have blossomed as people and as actors.  In some ways, they’re very much the same people as they were when I first met them.  It’s incredible given the circus that whirls around them.  You look at [the world premiere], it was a mob scene, and yet they retain their humility.  There’s a real decency and a real appreciation for what they’re a part of and a real appreciation for the fans.  They are amazing.  As actors, they’ve grown.  I think that they’ve learnt from each director, and they’ve learnt from the great actors we’ve had on set, who’ve been incredibly generous with them.  They’ve also learnt from their experiences elsewhere, on other films, on stage, and just by going from being eleven to now being in their twenties.  They’ve got more to bring.

On the first film, Chris Columbus would literally act out the scenes before them.  We had to do a lot of post-recording because Chris’s voice was going over it going “Come on, chin up!  Act!  You’re scared, you’re scared!” and then for the third film, Alfonso had each of them write an essay about their characters.  Dan wrote a page because he was asked to, Emma wrote ten, I think it was, and Rupert didn’t write anything – just like their characters.  And as they’ve gone on, I think they’ve become more active participants in deciding some of the choices that are made.  They are true collaborators.  They know their characters so well, and I think one of the things again that I love about this new film is that we spend quite a bit of time with them alone, and you really believe that friendship, and the reason why you do is because they’ve worked together for so long, and they know each other so well, and it all seems very truthful and real.

Heyman Talks Deathly Hallows & John Williams

Posted by Dijares On July - 14 - 2009

david-heyman3Harry Potter producer attended a Q&A session at an Apple store in Los Angeles yesterday. While there, he answered some questions, including some about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the actors, and more.

SnitchSeeker asked them if Jade, Tom Felton’s (Draco Malfoy) girlfriend, would have the chance to play the part of Draco’s wife in Deathly Hallows.

SnitchSeeker.com: Tom Felton mentioned his girlfriend Jade might play his wife in the epilogue. Did you cast her or the children of the trio yet?
David Heyman: I have no idea, no. Unfortunately we haven’t yet cast that section. He may WANT to cast his girlfriend.
SnitchSeeker: Yes.
Heyman: He does?
SnitchSeeker: He REALLY does.
Heyman: Okay, good. Well, I’ll keep that in mind … Nobody’s been cast yet for that part.

He said some of the older actors won’t get more screen time for the last film as much of the filming is done on the road.

He also gave more of a description of what will be in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park in Universal Studios, Orlando. He said there will be a Hogwarts Express that will lead people into the park. There will be Hogsmeade covered in snow with shops and restaurants, and the area will include three rides.

Some extras that the special collector’s editions of the Harry Potter DVDs will include audition tapes of Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Hermione Granger (in Sorcerer’s Stone).  He’s also thinking of including Evanna Lynch’s (Luna Lovegood) audition tape as well in Order of the Phoenix, and Jessie Cave’s (Lavender brown) screen test with Rupert Grint for Half-Blood Prince.

He also stated that he has spoken with the original soundtrack composer John Williams about coming back to score Deathly Hallows. He said that Mr. Williams would be back if schedules permit – but it’s a big IF.

RA (Richard Alexander)
DH (David Heyman)
RA: Hi, First I want to say thank you for your amazing work.
DH: Thank You.
RA: In a recent interview John Williams said that he would love to come back and bring his musical storytelling “full circle”. Will he come back for Deathly Hallows?
DH: The question is will John Williams come back? I’m a huge fan of John Williams he did three of the scores and I think he is amazing. He came up with some of the themes that have carried on. We have talked to John Williams and a lot of it will depend on his schedule for [Harry Potter] seven part two. If we can make work , and that’s a big if, for his schedule and ours then yes.
RA: Great, thanks.
