Once again. Entertainment Weekly has included Harry Potter in another one of their lists. This time it is for 20 Classical Opening Lines In Books. And since it is the first book of the series by J.K. Rowling printed by Scholastic Books in the US, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’s opening line was added to the list:
”Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.”
And I have to say that sentence pulled me into the book because I thought it was one of the funniest lines I ever read in a book after my mother died. Lolol.
Some of the other books in the list included:
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen; ”It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”
Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury; ”It was a pleasure to burn.”
A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean; ”In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly-fishing.”
