| David
Thewlis was born 20 March 1963 in Blackpool,
Lancashire, England. Mr. Thewlis will
be portraying Professor Remus Lupin
in the Harry Potter series.
For his role in Mike Leigh's Naked
David Thewlis received the National
Society of Film Critics Award, the New
York Film Critics Award, the London
Film Critics Award and a prize at the
Cannes Festival. He played the part
of Johnny, who left Manchester for London
only to find that he couldn't run away
from his own apocalyptic vision of mankind.
He survives only by virtue of his sharp,
sardonic wit which provides the comic
relief in the face of the impending
doom e.g. "I sent off for one of
those little linguaphone packages 'Talk
Shite in a Fortnight'. It's going very
well. I haven't quite got the hang of
the transitive verbs yet."
Maybe that role was just too perfect
for him, as he appears to be suffering
from Richard E. Grant syndrome (see
Withnail and I), in that his one outstanding
part renders all subsequent roles lightweight
by comparison.
David Thewlis even made it to Hollywood in such films as
The Island of Dr. Monroe (in his own words: a dreadful
experience, a dreadful film) and in 7 Years in Tibet
along the likes of Brad Pitt.
In the British comedy Whatever happened to Harold Smith?
he had the opportunity to prove his comic talent and his impeccable
dress-sense by parading round in a purple shirt and matching
moustache. In Divorcing Jack, a black satiric comedy-thriller
set in Belfast, he played a journalist who gets caught up
in a murder and ends up being chased by all and sundry. His
only ally is Rachel Griffith, who plays a gun toting nun.
As you can imagine "hilarity ensues". (source: Alternative
