forehead. As Lord Voldemort had killed
his parents, Albus Dumbledore, the Headmaster
of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and
Wizardry, brings Harry to live with
Vernon and Petunia Dursley and their
son, Dudley, Harry’s only living

of the same letters continue to be sent.
Mr. Dursley tries everything to stop
them. The day before Harry’s eleventh
birthday, the family finally goes away
to an island where the Dursleys feel

It notifies him that he has been accepted
at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and
Wizardry. Hagrid, the Keeper of Keys
at Hogwarts, also reveals to Harry the
real reason why Harry has no parents.

first meets Professor Quirrell, who

as Lord Voldemort’s.

3/4. Luckily, he runs into the Weasley
family who kindly helps him and quickly
befriends red-haired Ron Weasley. Ron,
who is also beginning Hogwarts that
year, explains to Harry a few things
about the wizard world, occasionally
interrupted by meeting the bookish Hermione
Granger and the bullying Draco Malfoy.
Harry is reunited with Hagrid upon the
arrival at Hogwarts.

Chapter Seven-The Sorting Hat
The first-year students are led into
the Great Hall where they are sorted
into the four different houses (Gryffindor,
Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin)
by the sorting hat. Harry, Ron, and
Hermione are all sorted into Gryffindor,
though Harry is almost put into Slytherin,
which is the house that most bad wizards
are placed, including Lord Voldemort.
He receives a shock when he glances
at Professor Snape, the Potions teacher,
and his scar gives a sharp pain.

the High Table, in a large gold chair,
sat Albus Dumbledore”

realizes that he has no trouble doing
this, though it was his first time.
Professor McGonagall spots how well
he flies and chooses him to be the new
Gryffindor Seeker on the House Quidditch
team, a wizard sport. Malfoy challenges
Harry to a duel that evening, though
he doesn’t show up, hoping to
get Harry and Ron into trouble. Fortunately,
they manage to escape trouble; however,
they accidentally find a room where
a three-headed dog guards a trapdoor.

worse, expelled”

when the Hogwarts staff gives him a
Nimbus Two Thousand broomstick, one

soon after meets with Oliver Wood, the
House Quidditch captain, who explains
the rules of a Quidditch game. On Hallowe’en
night during the feast, Professor Quirrell
reports that a troll has entered the
castle. Harry and Ron, knowing that
Hermione didn’t know about it,
set out to inform her and actually manage
to save her from large troll. This causes

after.

Harry has his first Quidditch match-
Gryffindor vs. Slytherin. Partway through
the game, his broom becomes uncontrollable,

it was Snape who was causing this; Hermione
set fire to his robes, which seems to
make Harry regain control of his Nimbus.
He soon after catches the Snitch, thus
providing Gryffindor with their first
victory of the year. The trio approach
Hagrid with their thoughts where he
lets slip some information concerning
the trapdoor as well as mentions Nicolas
Flamel.

catch it, he nearly swallowed it”

Chapter Twelve-The Mirror of Erised
It is Christmas holidays and Harry
and Ron, who remain at school instead
of going home, spend some time relaxing
together. On Christmas Day, Harry receives,
for the first time in his life, a few
presents, the most unusual being an
invisibility cloak that used to belong
to his father. He uses it to his advantage
by going to the Restricted Section of
the library at night, to look up information
on Nicolas Flamel. Unfortunately, he
accidentally causes a lot of noise and
must quickly escape where he stumbles
across a room that has a huge mirror.
When he looks into it, he sees his parents
looking back at him. Harry shows Ron
the mirror, but Ron sees something different,
and Harry returns the following night.
Here, he meets Dumbledore who persuades
him to never return again.
“Get it on, Percy,
come on, we’re all wearing ours,
even Harry got one”
-p.149
Chapter Thirteen-Nicolas Flamel
Accidentally, Harry comes across Flamel’s
name on a Chocolate Frog Card, leading
him, Ron, and Hermione to discover that
Fluffy is guarding the Philosopher’s
Stone. Harry also wins a Quidditch match
against Hufflepuff, which was suspiciously
refereed by Snape. After the game, Harry
follows Snape who meets and confronts
Quirrell about how to get past Fluffy,
the three-headed dog. Thinking this
could only mean trouble, Harry is sure
to tell Ron and Hermione.
“It’ll be
gone by next Tuesday”
-p.166
Chapter Fourteen-Norbert the Norwegian
Ridgeback
Upon questioning Hagrid about Flamel,
Hagrid invites the trio to his hut where
they discover he won a dragon’s
egg, which is illegal. Unfortunately,
Malfoy, who is peeking in Hagrid’s
window, spots the baby dragon, Norbert,
when it hatches and they must come up
with a way to get rid of it. Ron sends
word to his brother, Charlie, who arranges
to pick it up. However, Ron gets bit
y Norbert. While Ron is in the hospital
ward, he receives word from Charlie
the time and date that they’ll
pick up the now large dragon. Malfoy
manages to steal the letter from Ron.
Harry and Hermione have no choice but
to proceed with the plan, as it is too
late to write back to Charlie. Luckily,
they manage to get Norbert away but
they are caught out of bed, along with
Malfoy and Neville, another Gryffindor
boy.
“Hagrid, you live
in a wooden house”
-p.171
Chapter Fifteen-The Forbidden Forest
Harry, Hermione, and Neville’s
punishment is to lose fifty points each
from Gryffindor House and a detention
with Malfoy, lead by Hagrid, in the
Forbidden Forest. Their task is to find
an injured unicorn, and must therefore
split up to do so. After an incident
between Malfoy and Neville, Harry is
forced to be paired up with Malfoy.
They discover the unicorn, and the creature
that killed it was there as well, and
tries to attack Harry. Fortunately,
Harry is saved by Firenze, a centaur,
and the creature escapes, which Harry
is told by the centaur is Voldemort.
When they return to the castle, Harry
relates to Ron and Hermione what happened.
“Harry, everyone
says Dumbledore’s the only one
You-Know-Who was ever afraid of”
-p.190
Chapter Sixteen-Through the Trapdoor
After their exams are finished, the
trio goes and visits Hagrid where Harry
asks about the stranger that gave Hagrid
the dragon egg. They discover that he
might have told the stranger how to
get past Fluffy. Thinking it was Snape
and that he will act soon, they go to
McGonagall to speak with Dumbledore.
Professor McGonagall informs them that
the headmaster is away. Not seeing any
other way to save the Stone, they decide
to go together that night where they
must get past several enchantments laid
out by several of the teachers, just
as Hagrid had told them before. Due
to a very violent chess game, Ron is
injured, and Harry leaves Hermione to
take care of him, and goes off by himself
to face who he thinks is Snape.
“Yes-of course-but
there’s no wood!”
-p.202
Chapter Seventeen-The Man with Two
Faces
Instead of Professor Snape, Harry discovers
that Quirrell was putting on an act
all along so as to not be suspected
as the one who actually wanted the Stone.
He also discovers why Quirrell wears
his turban all the time: Voldemort has
been attached to the back of his head,
possessing him. Harry manages to find
the Stone by using the Mirror of Erised,
and is forced to battle Quirrell, where
Harry wins by unintentionally burning
Quirrell. Harry later wakes up in the
hospital wing and speaks to Dumbledore
about what had happened. Harry then
attends the end-of-year feast where
Gryffindor wins the House Cup and is
quite sad when he must leave to go home
for the summer holidays.
“I’m going
to have a lot of fun with Dudley this
summer…”
