It doesn't say specifically it was a male, they said Saphira would have to mate with Thorn, remember?

It's a male, it has to be. Otherwise, Eragon is as good as dead. The only reason he's being kept alive is because his dragon is the last female. Galbatorix wants them both alive. It's so unlikely that there will be a crazy twist where we find out the last dragon is female. And if that happened, doom would fall upon the Varden as Galbatorix would have an army of dragon riders at his command within a couple of years...
About knowing how he knows... that is of little significance. He's a dragon rider, he has his ways.

If your not Christopher Paloni you cant be 100% certain, he might have indicated at a time that the last egg might be male but Chris, like all other authors have a way of twisting their words.

I see what you mean but, I have to agree with Sere, you have no way of knowing this, you can't be so quick to say, "It has to be male," When there isn't substancial evidence. I too think it is a male but, I'm not going to 100% garuntee this, because...I do not know!? Good doesn't always have to win, maybe the last dragon is a girl and Galbatorix does have an army of dragon's and riders agsint him but, you forget this, what if the varden is able to capture the egg, or the dragon after it is hatched, male or female, and what if Katrina is the new rider, don't you think, since Roran is Katrina's love, that she would follow him, instead of Galbatroix? so that would be two males, against two females, evening the odds, actually that be two females, and a male (Oromis's dragon, can't remember his name at the moment) against two males. Or what if Murtaugh turnes back to good, and katrina is the new rider, and her dragon is a female? that's two males, and two females, against one male. Perhaps even they destroy galbatroix, and Shruikan or Thorn mates with Saphira, or the possible second female? Then there is the fact that my last sentence comes into play, and Thorn and Saphira mate, and Shruikan and the other dragon mates, considering it is a female, and then there's two seperate lines going, and then those two pairs of couples children mate, and then it goes on and on....complex, and most unlikely I know but, hey don't rule out the impossible, just because the probable sounds more possible then the inpractical...wao that sounded cool, and I just made it up, haha, but yeah, there is my little web of ideas, do with them what you will.... Wow that is quite the web of mating you have going on there, and better yet they are all possible! Also just to clarify I do think the last dragon egg is going to be male but I was putting in a different view as well.
