I really liked this book. It was exciting, and I couldn't put the book down. 01:)
The love between Tonks and Lupin was a surprise, but really cute. And I'm happy that Harry and Ginny finally got together, and I really hope Ron and Hermione will get together in the next book. 01:) |

This is a review by a guy named Mark, who is from England:
QUOTE Harry Potter and the half-Blood Prince is the latest instalment of JK Rowling’s hugely popular (for good reason!) Harry Potter series. In this penultimate book, we see a darker story, plot, settings and, indeed Harry, as well as the other characters we have become to know throughout the adventure. Harry, Ron and Hermione mature towards the age of consent - age seventeen - in the Wizarding world. The story is very complex and gripping, and the sixth book does not stray from the winning formula. It starts with Harry anticipating an enigmatic meeting with Dumbledore at Privet Drive. When the Dursleys find the professor on their doorstep in the middle of the night, they are expectedly not happy - especially Dudley, who never forgot the pigtail incident with Hagrid on Harry’s eleventh birthday! After a ‘discussion’ between the family and Dumbledore, Harry finds himself once again being whisked away to the Wizarding world. But before arriving at the Burrow, Dumbledore gives Harry a task: to help persuade the proud Horace Slughorn to teach at Hogwarts. Slughorn is a large (and slightly disturbed) man who is bent on keeping good connections with famous witches and wizard, and is delighted to have “The Boy Who Lived” in his home. Eventually, after much deliberation between Slughorn and Dumbledore, he gives in and agrees to teach at the school. After “an Excess of Phlegm” at the Burrow (read the book! ;-)) and an eventful trip to Weasleys Wizarding Wheezes joke shop in Diagon Alley, Harry once again returns to his favourite place in the world: Hogwarts. As any HP fan can expect, through the story there are confrontations, mysteries, spells, surprises and twist, which will be immensely enjoyable. You will laugh, cry, cringe, love and hate many events and characters as you turn the six-hundred-odd pages. I personally think this is the best outing of Harry Potter yet. J. K. Rowling is gradually making the books a lot darker and more mature, which introduces a lot more for the audience as they are growing with the books. Teenagers are finding Harry Potter more and more enjoyable as this transformation occurs. This is evident with the millions of sales Rowling has already made on the series, let alone the new book! It is highly advisable to read the other Harry Potter stories in order for any new fans, but believe me - it will be the best reading time of your life! And finally, there is a question playing on everyone’s minds: who is the Half-Blood Prince? I know. To find out, read the long awaited … Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince 16.7.05 Thanks, Mark, for submitting it!!! |

Thanks, Mark, for submitting it!!! I hadn't seen this before. The review sounds "canned" or modeled after a professional movie/book reviewer. For example, in this instance: the negotiations lasted one page....and Slughorn "gives in" by yelling out to DD who is walking away. The rest of the time DD was in the bathroom or talking about Hogwarts. Sorry, that's just the way it looks to me. |

QUOTE(king_fish @ Jul 20 2005, 11:08 AM) I enjoyed it, but was very dissapointed with the ending and lack of attention to certain things. So much just slips through the cracks; I want a deeper understanding of the magical world, and up until this book, the Harry Potter series had provided. It's possible that this dissapointment was due to the fact that, as JK stated, this is really part one in the Heptology's finale, not the penultimate stand-alone. We were, thus, left without the closure with which the other books had concluded. Either way, I felt less satisfied than I had with the rest. Another reason for thinking Half Blood Prince was mediocre is simply that, as far as I can tell, it sets up the seventh to be unsatisfying as well. I want an imaginative finale that gives closure and answers all my questions (not, dear god, in the form of an accursed epilogue), and I do not at all desire a Lord of the Rings epic journey to destroy the Dark Lord's evil artifact of doom. What would the series be without Hogwarts? Without homework and classes and all those things which hooked us all in the first place? When there is nothing left to learn about the world of Wizardry, there is certainly nothing left to read. Despite my complaints, I'm rereading it. Perhaps this time I'll like it a bit more. It was good, better than most books on the market, but not what I had expected. And, as a final, lingering question... is a mouth organ a harmonica? You are right, what is the Harry Potter series without Hogwarts? Afterall, wasn't it in Hogwarts where everything started for Harry? If he doesn't return to school, what'll happen to his ambition of becoming an auror? I feel, JK Rowling should reconsider sending Harry back to Hogwarts and letting him finish his education. Afterall, the morning after he succeeds in destroying Voldemort, he has got to find some form of work which he will enjoy even if he already has a lot of gold to keep him comfortable for the rest of his life. 01:) |

So here's the deal with HBP. This was one of those books I needed to talk to someone about the second I finished it. I felt like I was in shock as soon as Snape killed DD, to which I might add I don't understand why he rose over the threshold and flew off the tower considering the Aveda curse usually stops people in their tracks dead. That's off the point though and where I'm going is I hated the ending right away until I talked it over with a couple of my friends and now, thanks to the ideas of people on this website, believe it couldn't have ended any better. I've never been more ready to read a book in my life, I can't wait for the next one and it's due entirely to the writing style of the great JKR.

OMHO this is the second best HP book after the GoF.
I love the way they go insight Voldy person, and all those clues about his past and the DD approach "know your enemy". That's absolutely wonderful and it's also a lot of fun for the various relationships between the kids, Harry - Luna, Harry -Ginny , Ron - Herminone etc. only great delusion is a couple of dialogue between DD and Harry. heck, there's a page were they go on saying "you're gonna kill him or you gonna die" "so I'm gonna kill him first" "yes you should kill him" Gimme a break! is harry going to be DD's hangman? he is just 16! how could you wish anyone to kill another human being so lighthearted? harry life will be spoiled forever with such a pound on his soul. Voldy is evil, ok, but i'm a second chancher. Who is DD to say who deserve to live and who deserve to die? that's a thing I didnt like and it's not fitting the DD character. I'd rather see Voldy imprisoned again in Azkban than dead. So maybe someday he could have the chanche to repent of his sins. Hey I'm not religious, but I don't like to see people wish death to other people. Rest of the book and the whole story is fantastic, my favourite is Snape, half good, half evil... Jo is a genius 61:hedwig: !!! |

Pretty good, my favorite after PoA and CoS. I thought some things were predictable, like DD's death, which is why i'm hoping there is a catch to his death
Also, I don't think Sirius was discussed enough, he was almost forgooten in this book rather that a fresh wound. The book left a lot of loose ends but I enjoyed learning about Voldemort's past and I really liked the weak and concerned Draco Malfoy. One of my favorite parts was betwwen him and Harry in the bathroom, and I liked the conversation moments before DD's death |

This book was the one with the most emotion. It ws probably my favorite after Goblet of Fire, if not tied with first place. So much was revealed in this book but I didn't think she rushed anything, and that's good. In this book, I laughed I cried...mostly cried, and I think it's a great quality in a book to be able to get its reader to outwardly express emotion. OotP was better for laughter, but overall HBP was best. And like brooks said above, after I read this one, I couldn't stop trying to talk about it with people who hadn't finished. =D
