(Dear mods, please pin this elsewhere if this topic already exists - I haven't been active recently and so am not up to date on what does and does not already exist!)

Just wondering whose death effected you most.

I have to say I wasn't overwhelmed by Cedric's passing. It was so sudden and he wasn't a main character. On the other hand, I love Dumbledore and was sorry to see him die (that is if you believe him dead!). H[font=Arial]owever, I was expecting something like that so I must say I was most upset when Sirius died. Sirius and Lupin had been my favourite characters and I was really longing for something great to happen to Sirius as he'd had a shocking time (first Azkaban, then Grimmauld place and then not even being allowed out..). I was so shocked when he died and thought it was almost unfair - hadn't enough happened to him already? And of course I was devasted for Harry too..

So what about you? Who did you cry most for?

When Cedric died, I thought "ok he wasn't that major at least it wasn't Sirius" But then book 5 came out. And that's when I went crazy. I remember first reading it, Harry was throwing things at Dumbledore and I was sitting there going "go Harry, it's his fault, maybe this will bring Sirius back". By the end of the book, I was in tears. Of course, my continued yelling at anyone who came within 5 metres of me for the next week or so, did not bring my beloved Sirius back, but it did seem to help. So I waited for book 6, everyday convincing myself that Sirius would be back and that all would be fine. Of course, I knew it was a hopeless battle.

Then when book 6 finally came, I found myself angry at Dumbledore. He began to get on my nerves, always trying to justify not telling Harry the entire thruth. When Dumbledore died, I was sad, but I didn't throw my book across the room like I did when Sirius died.

Over the last three weeks (Im on holidays!) I re-read all 6 books. At first when reading book one and two, I couldn't put my finger on why they seemed so empty. And then it hit me, there was no Sirius. I found myself, alone in a world where I used to be totally imersed. At the mention of Sirius name at the very begining of book 1, I felt as though someone had just squeezed my heart.....

R.I.P Sirius Black

When Cedric died I was reading the books with my nephew. We'd each take a chapter and read it out loud to each other. Of course (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) the chapter where Cedric died was mine to read. I started it, and when it came to where I knew Cedric was going to die, I had to turn it over to my nephew. I cried with his death.

Sirius, I didn't cry for his. It was done in a way that for some reason it never really even made me sad. I guess I kinda resolved myself to the fact that he had been ruined by the dementors. He was in a lot of pain, and never would be happy no matter what so I felt at piece with his death.

As for Dumbledore I cried starting with the chapter because I could see it coming. It was like right from the beginning the hand writing was on the wall. I was very upset *at first*; then the wheels started turning and I began to feel that maybe with all that JK had put in the book there were clues to Dumbledore not really being dead. So I am now to the point I feel he is alive. But if he is dead I'll be fine with it.

Cedric was the hardest, he was a kid, and I dang well better not see any more of my kids dying. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) Oh Draco isn't one of my kids. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laughing.gif)

Cedric was the biggest shock for me. I wasn't really a big fan of him, but it was kind of like wha? Did that really just happen?? It was so sudden I didn't believe it at all. And the fourth me...oh goodness I lost it. That part killed me.

Sirius...I never really cared for Sirius either. I mean, I liked what he was for Harry but my sister gave the end away, that he died, and so I knew it was coming so it wasn't that sad.

Like Baty, with Dumbledore I was crying like 2 chapters before it happened and it was so heartbreaking, but I saw it coming. Even with all of that, I still cried and cried. So I think Dumbledore's was the saddest.

Cedric's death was not a surprise to me. I saw it coming as soon as the cup turned out to be a portkey. As for crying I very VERY rarely cry at stuff in books.

Sirius's death actually caught me a little more by surprise. Actually until Harry reacted and Lupin held him back I wasn't sure that he was dead at all. Now, did I cry when Sirius died? No but I did get choked up by the turmoil that Harry went through after his death, it is one of the reasons that I wrote chapter three of my fan fiction the way I did.

When Dumbledore died you all know what my reaction was. I have calmed down of course and I plan to re-read the book to search for clues that maybe he isn't actually dead after all. As far as what death was the saddest I can only relate that in terms of how these events affect Harry since they are all, well… fictional. Dumbledore's demise is by far the most devastating to the characters left behind and it will change Harry. We have already seen some evidence of the changes that this has wrought at the funeral.

DD's death affected me the most and not in such a good way. I almost gave up on the series all together. That was not the effect from either one of the other deaths so I guess the answer for me is Dumbledore.

I wasn't actually sad when Cedric died because I didn't actually think much of him (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) . He had only been introduced in the 4th book as a kind of main character, so we didn't know him that well.

I think I was most shocked when Sirius died (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) . I think Sirius was a legend and he really made Harry happy (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) so it was quite sad to see him go (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) ... But I have my fingers crossed he's going to come back in the 7th book. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Dumbledore's death upset me the most (IMG:style_emoticons/default/crying.gif) . I've never ever cried while reading a book, but when it was Dumbledore I just kept on balling my eyes out (IMG:style_emoticons/default/weeping.gif) . You just wouldn't expect him to go so quickly. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wizard.jpg)

All in all I think Dumbledore affected me the most, because I just kept on thinking for the next few days, He's dead!

Now I cried a lot when Cedric died, Sirius... well it didn't bother me, that much, because of the way it was done. Dumbledore on the other hand had me crying for the rest of the book!!!

I think that it was saddest when Sirius died. Harry was really upset about that, and thats the only time that I've ever cried reading the books. It was sad when Dumbledore died, but I kind of expected it. Cedric's death didn't really effect me at all.

Serectly I have to say Cedric's death was the most horrible, other than crying I couldn't sleep for few days properly, and don't say the film...I was seeing his eyes through the next week practically everywhere! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/weeping.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/weeping.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/weeping.gif)

Siruis's death is described in two words by me: Bitter, Sound...(IMG:style_emoticons/default/crying.gif)

Dumbledore's death was the kind of your father dying...No really I was left in deaths of despair alone with only me and myself...So horrible.
For the first in my life I wanted to kill Snape more than ever, more than everyone and everyone!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/devil.gif)

Please spell out ALL your words! Thanks...

I think that DD's is obviously the saddest. How could Jo do such a thing?! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/weeping.gif) Of course, this gives me the idea that there's more to DD.

I was shocked when Cedric died--I hadn't read the book yet at that point. I just saw it in the movie, and I remember refusing to budge from my seat, mouth gaping, turning to the faces of my dedicated Harry Potter fan friends to give me some sort of hope, desperately pleading, "but she can't kill a student. it's just not right." Each shook their head sympathetically, and confirmed the sad truth.

Then, I read book 5. And it was so much worse. This time, I was alone. No HP friends around to carry me through. I tried calling and writing every HP friend I knew. Surely, Sirius could not be dead. It was just a mistake. I misread it. The editors were wrong. JKR published the wrong edition. I mean, he endured so much just to die? It wasn't fair. Then came the soothing rationalizations: maybe he really wasn't dead. Maybe he could come back through the veil. Maybe he'd be saved afterall. I was right on with Harry's reaction to his death. I think I was angry with DD too. Why? I didn't know. I didn't need to know. I just wanted Sirius back.

Then, book 6. Well, now I wasn't as inexperienced. This time, I was expecting someone to die, and as a preparation, I even tried to make a list of the characters I expected would meet their end. Odds were high for Dumbledore. He had many things stacked against him: he was a major character, harry loved him, the wizarding world loved him, he was powerful, the only wizard voldemort was scared of, and ... he was old. So, when his time came, I thought, I am expecting this. What I didn't expect was how it was done. Yet again, JKR managed to shock me, after all my emotional preparation. I was left again, thinking, "It's just not possible. Snape--kill DD? No!!!!!!!"

So, I'm a little nervous for Book 7. There have been allusions to Harry possibly dying, and as much as I think, "well, she can't possibly kill her very own hero," from her track record, I guess anything's possible.

But, to answer to the topic question--sirius's death was the worst for me. He was brave, fiercely loyal, and had strength of heart. Plus, he brought Harry so much comfort and joy, and found as much in Harry. He deserved life, after having so much of it taken away.

I was the saddest when Dumbledore died. I cried, it was so sad. and i still cry when i read that part (and I have read the 6th book 5 times).
with Siruis i got mad, i wanted Bellatrix to die. I was so mad I called my cousin (who also loved the HP books) at 2am just yelling about Bellatrix. she thought i was going crazy and she still makes fun of me because of that.
and with Cedric i was shooked. I couldn't believe that Rowlings killed a student off. I was amazed but I was always puzzled by wormtail killing him. I do not know I always picture wormtail as weak, but he killed without a second thought. I do not know that never set right with me.
But back to the topic. I think Dumbledores was the saddest, but there was a feeling from the begining that he was going to die and that just made it worse.

It's between Sirius and D.D. Cedric wasn't as close to Harry as the other to, so it wasn't sad for me. I know I cried my eyes out when Sirius died, and as for D.D., I screamed my heart out so I wonder which was sadder........................................

As for Cedric... I didn't cry when he died, I did get misty-eyed when Harry came back from the graveyard with his body and was so torn up and didn't want to leave his side. But I was sad more for Harry's turmoil than I was for Cedric's death.

As for Dumbledore, I absolutely loved him. However, I was a few chapters away from his death when I was online and stumbled upon a picture of a spoiler shirt that said "Dumbledore dies" and I just had to get offline right then and read until I got to that part. I didn't believe it, and I did cry a little, but it felt as though with all his power and all that he had taught HP, I knew he would die before the series was up, so it wasn't that big of a shocker.

Sirius was the worst for me. Other than the magical trio and Dumbledore, Sirius was my favorite character. I loved him for what he was to Harry and how he cared for Harry. I also saw him as a second father to Harry and loved how he kept helping him out in whatever way he could. When he died, I had to sit the book down and just cry my eyes out. It absolutely killed me!

This is hard for me, as I've been personally touched by death so much, that each one of the deaths in the book was very painful. Unfortunately I (along with some others on these boards) found out about DD's death before the book came out. And about who did the killing. Very upsetting.

Anyhow, the reactions to the deaths are what affect me most. For me, I really started to ball when Lupin was holding Harry back, telling him that Sirius was gone, but having a hard time saying it.

I did most definitely cry about DD's death, but not when he died. I cried when Harry came to the realization of just how alone he was. You can read my signature. It's such a lost and lonely part. How Harry realizes that, truly, he's all on his own. Fate has made him a loner - he does have the trio, but he knows that he has no one (an adult) that he can look to for knowledge, like he did with DD and Sirius. So very heartbreaking...

He could not let anybody stand between him and Voldemort: he must abandon forever the illusion he ought to have lost at the age of one. That the shelter of a parent's arms meant that nothing could hurt him. There was no waking from his nightmare, no whisper in the dark that he was safe, really, that it was all in his imagination... he was more alone than he had ever been before.

Like you I cried not so much about DD's death, but about where it left Harry. So alone, so burdened. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Like Dij said, some of us found that Dumbledore died before the book was released. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) None the less it affected me greatly. Tears started to flow at the beginning of the chapter, and I cried almost through the rest of the book. I'm just wondering if I cried because of his death or the bet I lost? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Cedric's death was very emotional for me. At that point my nephew and I were taking turns reading chapters, and it was my turn for the chapter of Cedric's death, I couldn't read it I had to have my Nephew read it. The tears just flowed.

Sirius' death didn't bother me, because it was done so nonchalantly. It was like ok, now he's here, now he's not. Very subtle.
