Okay, so here's a wild thought. There is a great deal of info about Squibs in the stories -- even to the point of revealing that weird Mrs. Figg is a Squib who is so "muggle-like" that Harry is amazed she is magic folk. What if, back in Harry's mother's ancestry, one of his foreparents was a Squib, and so it only appeared that Harry's mother was from non-magic background. Maybe Lily's mother or father was a Squib? Okay, go ahead. Tell me this is absolutely moronic. Or -- here's another crazy thought. Maybe Aunt Petunia is a squib. That's why she is so hateful toward her sister.

Addendum to my last post: I feel like a great deal of emphasis needs to be put on Petunia's statement in the fisherman's shack on Harry's birthday in SS. She knew Harry was a wizard -- how could you not be my "perfect" sister being what she was. Perfect sister -- making her the "imperfect" sister: A Squib -- maybe?
Also, Petunia's name puzzles me: what characteristic is JKR going for? Petunia is a nightshade -- so toxic to one degree or another. It is from the Latin for tobacco -- a reference to smoky/shady secrets? And sounds very much like "petulant" -- insolent, rude, ill humored. |

I also have given consideration to Petunia being a squib. She definitely knows more about the wizarding world then she is willing to admit. She's very jealous of Lily, and if she really hated magic why would she be jealous of something she hated. I would be jealous if My sister was a full fledged witch, and I wasn't able to perform magic like a squib. I need to go back and read them all over again.

I have also pondered whether Petunia is a Squib or not. All her jealousy is from something and I don't think it's just a possible lack of attention from her parents. :o

why does everyone think she is a Squib?? it clearly states the lily is a muggle-born!!! :o i just think the only reason Pet. hates magic is b/c her sis had it and she wanted it... she didn't get any attention from her parents, they were too busy praising lily... sounds like harry, dudly, and the dursleys to me... i'm surprised the stupid Pet. can't even related slightly to how Harry feels... or she just doesn't show it cuz she is scared Vernon will dump her.

I have a feeling that maybe in the Evan's (and <insert mother's maiden name here>) history somewhere there has been a previous Witch or Wizard. It couldn't be either of Petunia's or Lily's parents. But, Petunia said that her parents were so proud of having a Witch in the family. That struck me kinda funny because why would they be so proud if Muggles don't know anything about the Wizarding World? When Petunia said that it made me feel that perhaps one of her parent's ancestors has been a Witch or Wizard and they were happy to see that it had happened to one of their own children. I could very easily be wrong. Like you said, Lily was a Muggle-Born. But Petunia saying that her parents were proud made me wonder why when they should know nothing. I mean, it could've easily been simple pride like Hermione's parents have for her. And it probably is. Either way though, I agree. I think Petunia hates magic so much because her sister got a lot more attention than she did. Funny though, isn't it? Lily was gone 10 months of the year and she got more attention? Their parents really must've neglected Petunia when Lily was around. |

No wonder she was pretty *mad* at her sister and started to rant about her in PS/SS.
Also, about the comment 'they were so roud to have a witch in the family' .. i agree, i always thought that there must have been someone else 'further back' in the family tree that possesed magical abilities. -------- sorry for the language Batty. yeah thats a good theory! i'm very mad at Petunia b/c she should relate to how poor Harry feels!! They all love Dudley (Pet, Vernon, even Aunt Marge) and hate Harry... Pet. had the exact same thing happen to her!!! okay, i am slightly confused now -- is a Squib a person who has doesn't have magic powers but have magic parents OR is a Squib a person who has no magic (nor their parents) but one of their ancestors was magic?? :ouch:

A squib is the opposite to a muggle-born. a squib is a person that cannot perform magic, although her/his parents are wizards, can perform magic.

Oops -- my mistake. I was mistakingly quoting the MOVIE and not the SS -- where Petunia says, "my dratted sister" and not "my perfect sister" as the movie renders it. Still -- I'm thinking there's more to Petunia than simple sibling rivalry.

i think Petunia wants magic and she is just scared to admit it. :P she doesn't have it so she says she doesn't like it! thats why she remembered what a dementor was, even though she normally acts like she doesnt know and doesn't want to know a thing about magic... and have any of u noticed? Pet. said that she "heard that awful boy telling-- her about them-- years ago..." when was Pet. ever around lily and james?? did james come by their house?

I assumed that since Petunia was saying that it happened years ago and since her parents were totally cool with Lily being a Witch, that they wouldn't have minded having Lily's boyfriend come over. That way Petunia would've heard about it when Lily was still living at home while dating James. :wub:

You know, i hadn't thought of that - Is Petunia older or younger than Lily, I wonder? James,I'm sure, must have came to their parents house, I mean, they wouldn't have become married (hopefully) without the parents knowing him. Also, on another note, Petunia mentions Lily coming home durin gthe summer changing cups into animals. Now, how is it that the ministry didn't get her for that? I mean, that's a transfiguration, right? Also, how does the ministry tell the difference between another adult person perfomring magic in a house, and the child performing the magic. Unless Lily wasn't the only one in the house who had magic powers. :unsure: |

I've always wondered why Lily didnt get done in for doing magic, maybe the underage restriction was bought in after she left school, or she did the magic when she was of age. |

hmm either JK made a mistake or MoM didnt have that law by then... though the latter is unlikely... i think JK just made a mistake... yes i do wonder if Pet. and Lily have any other siblings?? although if they do, if they're not magic then surely Petunia would have talked about them or invited them over before?? and if she did have another magic sibling then she naturally wouldn't talk about it!... but harry should somehow know...
also i think Pet is maybe older! her parents didn't like her much and when lily was born they were excited that she was a witch! because Pet said her parents never gave her attention, as they were too busy w/ Lily... and surely if Lily was older than Pet than her parents would have to spend more time with Pet sinces she is a baby?? if Pet was the older, they'd have to give her all the attention.. okay, i'm not sure if any of that made sense, because I myself am quite confused now!! :crazy: |

Good question! I always thought of her as younger because of her jealousy. If good things happened to me, my sister would become jealous. If good things happened to her, I would be happy for her. Really good question!
I know! I've been wondering the same thing. I think it may have something to do with whether the Muggles around know about magic or not. When Dobby performed the Hover Charm, he was in the vicinity of Mr. And Mrs. Mason. Muggles who know nothing about magic. So Harry got busted for the magic being performed. But at Lily's parents house, they would know about magic, so maybe that's why she didn't get busted for it. :huh: I do think that perhaps the Restriction was placed after Lily left school. But that seems kinda late to be placing a restriction like that around when they've had Wizarding children attending Hogwarts for centuries already.
Something else that bothers me. Harry gets busted for magic he didn't even perform. Yet, when the Advance Guard comes for him, they use magic like crazy and not a single warning comes from the MOM when we know that were out to get Harry for anything and everything.
Personally, I don't think they did. We know they didn't have any more sisters. But I don't think they had any brothers either. The only mention of any other relative so far is Aunt Marge. I would think that if they did have any brothers, he would've been mentioned already. |

i'm surprised nobody ever really asks JK anything about Petunia <_< i think petunia knows more than she lets on... i think that she will die die die... yeppie i got a theory.... speaking of which wouldn't that be SO annoying if, say for instance, DD has to tell Harry something REALLY important but before he can spit it out he drops dead??
