I just re-read this book and noticed at the funeral where Harry recalls when Dumbledore spoke with the Merpeople in Mermish. Did he also understand Parseltongue, even if he couldn't speak it? In Morfin's memory, Voldemort and Morfin were conversing in Parseltongue, but Dumbledore did not ask Harry for a translation. Somehow I don't think Morfin would have been in the right state of mind to translate it for him at the time the memory was extracted.

When saying this, do you mean that he has seen the memory before and asked someone else what it means or what? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

No, it is hard to explain. Have you ever heard of a telepath. a telepath can read/hear your thoughts and knows what you are saying before you say them. Well i think that is what DD is doing. That he is a telepath and can see or hear (in their mind) what they are saying. So I think that is how he knows what is being said. Does that make sence?
Because I don't think he could have leanered it because of what Tom Riddle said in CofS (along these lines-I can't remember the exact words) that he & harry have been the only parseltongue in hogwarts since Slytherin. and also what Hermione said about it being very rare. so i don't think there was anyone to teach him it.
I hope this helps.

I don't think DD was a parseltongue as he didn't hear the Basilik back in CoS. He would have understood the snake had he been a parseltongue. I do, however, believe that he could understand a memory as he waded through it.

Very good point. DD did not hear the basilisk in COS. Only Harry did, and Ginny (when she was taken over by the diary/Riddle).
