Having just watched the phillosophers stone on sky movies i have just realized something.....

Why is it that Proffeser Quirrell can not get the stone out of the mirror, as only someone who wanted the stone but didn't want to use could get the stone out and Quirrell was not after the stone for his own gain he wanted it for Voldermort, so why couldn't he get it if he himself was'nt going to use it.

there probably two answers either...... wanting the stone to give to someone counts as using the stone.

or maybe because Voldermort was attatched to Quirrell and Voldermort wanted to use the stone that he couldn't get it out.

I believe it all came down to honesty, and what it was going to be used for. Quirrell didn't want it for himself, but it was still wanted for someone who was going to use it for evil purposes. It was explained, but I can't remember the full explanation, I'd have to go back and read the book.

I think it's most likely this answer. The mirror is pretty powerful in itself and DD magic would probably be designed to stop someone who was 'possesed' by someone else to get it from getting it

It's in the wording: He made it so that someone could have the stone so if "they (themselves) wanted to find the stone but did not want to use the stone". Remember the function of the mirror was to show the true desire of the person looking into it. Quirrel did not see himself serving Voldermort. He was himself powerful and rich. Therefore even though he said that his wish was to serve his master, his true intent was otherwise. Notice that Harry did not get the stone until he only saw himself in the mirror. As long as he saw his parents and family the stone stayed hidden. The minute his only desire was to find the stone, which he had no intentions of using, was he able to see it and obtain it. Q wanted to obtain and use it, which either to answer his own desires or to serve his master would have constituted as both.
