I was rereading book 2, and in the book Lockheart, the great gimp, said how he used the complex hormopheous charm to transform a werewolf back to human form, and how the town was saved from the monthly ravaging of the werewolf. Now supposedly he didnt make up any of the stuff he did, he found out and researched it. I am wondering if they might be able to find a cure for Lupin.

I kind of doubt it, but it is something to ponder.

I brought up this topic ages ago on the old Boards and everyone passed it off as a tall-tale by Lockhart. I'm glad someone else was wondering about this too. :D I've still been thinking about it and all I've come up with so far is that perhaps the charm has be be administered within a certain time limit or age limit. Lupin said he was a small child when he received the bite, but that there was no cure at that time. And there was a person in the ward with Mr. Weasley who had recently received a bite from a werewolf, but then Mr. Weasley said there was no cure. So I'm wondering if maybe you can't be more than a certain age for the Homorphous Charm to be administered or/and that it has to be performed within a certain time of receiving the bite.

what do you mean that you have to be treated within a certain time or by a certain age or overwise it lasts forever?

Well, if Lupin hasn't been treated with the Homorphous Charm yet, it's because he can't be. Either because too much time has elapsed since his bite or because he is too old and it won't work on adults. (I have to admit though, I find the age one unlikely) With the person in the ward with Mr. Weasley, he couldn't be treated with the Charm either. Again, supposedly because of the same reasons as Lupin. Perhaps you can only be cured if you receive the Charm immediately after receiving the bite. There are muggle medicines that work in the same way. The only problem I have so far with this theory is that Lockhart said he "delivered them from the monthly terror of werewolf attacks." That statement can be taken two ways. Either he stopped the attacks that had already been happening. Or, he prevented those attacks from ever happening. It sounds more like the former though. :(

Maybe everyone just figures there is no cure because it is so rare - or many people have claimed that they have found a cure but have not been able to deliver because the spell/potion is so difficult. Then Lockhart went and found someone who could perform a cure and then wiped their mind. Now no one knows the cure but Lockhart - and he has lost his mind and could not have performed the magic before his mind wipe.

Maybe for book 8 Hermione will be looking at her old notes or re-reading Lockhart's book and recall that Lockhart knows the cure if they can recover his memories...
