So I've been having fun coming up with possibilities for titles...as someone said at some earlier point, JKR almost always names the books after some new person/place/thing that we haven't really heard about yet, so I recognize that this will at best be pure speculation and guessing fun, but why not? :)
some titles I've come up with that could have double meanings or could refer to any number of things...
Harry Potter and the Lion's Legacy (thinking of Godric Gryffindor here)
Harry Potter and the Lion's Den (thinking of Godric's Hollow, although "Lion's Den" sounds a bit ominous)
Harry Potter and the Auror's...something. Depending on where she takes the story, could be "Auror's Wand" or "Auror's Promise" or any number of things, and for some reason the "Auror" I am thinking of is either Harry's mum or dad...I wouldn't be surprised if one of them makes it into the title in some way.
Also, I personally think JKR will be avoiding such titles as "Last Battle" or "Final Encounter" or any of these types of things...she usually uses the title to introduce something from the wizarding world that is unfamiliar to us - which is also why I doubt it will be Harry Potter and the Hunt for the Horcruxes lol although that does have a ring to it I guess :)
Any other ideas? They can be as out in left field as you want lol some of mine are just purely me putting together words that could mean something in book 7.

possible titles:
Harry potter and the (what ever the last horcrux is)
Harry potter and the pensive
Harry potter and the *some weird item/group of people*
My bet is on the first one.

WOW this one is awesome! I *so* want DD to have transformed himself into a pheonix at his funeral...not as an animagus (since I believe his body at least is dead), but into a full-fledged pheonix who will come to Harry's assistance and be his companion for the rest of his life, like Fawkes was for DD. :)

That's what I thought of, but I don't really think that will be it. The first part of the word "horcrux" would just be one more thing for the people who think the books are evil to scream about.

Ooh, yeah, I like Return of the Phoenix! I am now completely convinced that DD will come back as a phoenix - Harry is pretty sure is saw one fly out of the fire, and JKR has said DD's patronus is a phoenix. Great title!

Harry Potter and the (R.A.B.'s stolen Horcrux), Harry Potter and the Dark Lord's Desire?

I had two in mind that I thought were pretty obvious. One of them was already said.
Harry Potter and the Dark Lord (It's the last book, and even though its always been about harry potter and the dark lord, this time nothing else is in the way)
Harry Potter and the Fulfilled Prophecy
I like the last one better. But I bet it is either something about the prophecy or the dark lord. Like "and the Dark Lord's Vengeance" or something.

Harry Potter and the Final Battle??
hannahcarmen
Aug 6 2005, 11:28 AM
I don't have an actual idea, but the title will not be so final. JKR obviously enjoys spinning out loose ends, and I'm sure she will not be wrapping absolutely everything up in the final book, but leaving some mystery for the readers. Therefore, the title will not be so blatant or final, so no HP and the Final battle, or HP and the Prophecy Fufillment. Maybe HP and the [insert obscure word here].

Aug 6 2005, 12:36 PM
Guessing a title is just too hard IMO. The only thing I am confident about is that it will not involve anything like 'last' or 'final'. It has to be a little bit more mysterious.
Although I would like it if she could just get straight to the point and say 'Harry Potter and the Death of Lord Voldemort' so I can stop worrying that Harry could die.

It would be wonderful if the title has the term Necromancy or some derivation of the term. It would certainly tie up all thoughts of dark magic and Voldemort's ability to conjure the dead up as servants.

Harry Potter and Return of the Phoenix
I totally love that, because it has more than one way to go. It could mean literally a Phoenix would be invloved or have something to do with the Order.
My idea is
Harry Potter and the Final Showdown or
Harry Potter and the Clash of the Heirs Since some asume Harry is Gryffindor's heir. Neither are likely, but oh well.

Harry Potter and the Room of Requirement
Harry Potter and the Prime Minister
I think muggles will play an important role in the 7th book because we were introduced to him in the 6th book but nothing further than that. Since JKR wrote that chapter, there must be more to it than that.

The titles of the books follow a pattern
Thing (phylosphiers stone** sos about sp)
Place (chamber of secrets)
Person(Prisionior of azkaban)
Thing (goblet of fire)
Place (Order of phoenix - This one does apply to all 3 really but still...)
Person (half blood price)
So i belive it will either be a "Thing" or a title which encumplses all three attributes.

it is hard to predict the title, because each one so far has been of a brand new consept revieled in that book. so it is very likely something we don't know yet.

"Harry Potter and the Dark Lord"

Possible Titles:
Harry Potter and the Final Retribution (aka revenge)
Harry Potter and the Sage's Wishes (Dumbledore)
Harry Potter and the Ministry's Redemtion (A big battle maybe?)
Harry Potter and the Avada Kadavra (Harry finding the power to kill Voldemort)
Harry Potter and the Dormant Potency (Hidden Power)
Harry Potter and the Ultimate Sacrifice (Harry giving his life so the world could be saved, kinda like Jesus)
Harry Potter and the Blood of Compassion (Lily's love inside both Harry and Voldemort)
Harry Potter and the Butt Woping of Voldemort
Harry Potter and JK is Screwing with Our Heads
Well thats it!!! But I doubt any we say will be right. After all, the titles of all the books have been things we don't know of yet. So I think JK will stick with that.

I don't think the title will be obvious. Since when have any of the titles told us exactly what happens in the book? "Harry Potter and the Dark Lord" or "Harry Potter and the Final Showdown" wouldn't fit I don't think. For me the title would have to be a mystery until you read the book. Yes, everybody was guessing who the HBP was, but if the title was HP and the Dark Lord, then that would be obvious what was going to happen. HP and the Final Showdown sounds too American (no offence) and nothing like JK (sorry to pick out those two names people suggested).
My imagination does not stretch far enough to think of suitable names, but I like Damaged5555's ones. Return of the Phoenix would be good, if it didn't remind me too much of Lord of the Rings.

Yeah, we're all going to die waiting this long for the last book. Thanks to Jo for giving us some spoilers so we can sleep easier at night. I to think the last book may be called Harry Potter or even Harry Potter and The Scar. Jo did say the last word in the book will be scar or at least it was until she goes over the last chapter so maybe the title will be simply that since she wanted to end it that way.

Hi. I've read through all these titles, and I've laughed at some and nodded encouragingly with others...
I think the person with the best ideas is Damaged5555.
A lot of the tiels people have suggested are very... I dunno, cliche? Not to offend of course. In my opinion, JKR will steer clear of anything cliche or corny. All of her titles to date have been very original, using words that are rarely seen in films.
Anyway, I think what we should do in our speculations is rule out words that will NOT be used. As such, I have comprised a short list of things that will DEFINATELY not be it. (IMO). And also a list of words that I think are very unlikely to be included.
My reasons for the first list... are pretty obvious...
Harry Potter (well, it will be the title obviously, but not a sub-title)
Philosopher
Sorceror
Stone
Chamber
Secrets
Prisoner
Azkaban
Goblet
Fire
Order
Phoenix
Half-blood
Prince
Now, here are words that I expect won't be in the title. I'm not going to detail each one. Just assume that my reasons are either because they are either A) Similar to other titles B) Sound cliche C) Sound stupid :P
Return
Revenge
Dark
Flame
Evil
Voldemort
Death
End
Final
Battle
Defeat
Dumbledore
Horcrux
And I invite others to add to this list...
I think the title will be something we can't predict. But I'd personally like it if the word Sword was in there. It will most likely sound very dark...
We must remember... For the past three books the titles have had very little significance to the story itself.
The first three were quite aptly named. The next three... even though they definately sounded good, were a bit more abstract. The Goblet of Fire had very little to do with the actual story. The Order of the Phoenix barely lifted a finger during the entire novel. And the Half-blood Prince, even though it was certainly intersting to find out it was Snape... there didn't seem to be any real significance.
Of course, we may yet discover the full significance of that last one.
Well, those are some of my thoughts. Go ahead and dismiss me. :P

I agree. I don't think it will be an obvious name, it would spoil the mystery of the book. I also don't think any names will be in the book name, at least not directly.
Two people have been given a title for a book, and they were Sirius (PoA) and Snape (HBP). These books were for books 3 and 6, therefore I don't think any names even indirectly will be used for the title of book 7.
But the title won't contain anything like Dursley or Weasley or Black or a surname along those lines.

I don't think Scar will be in the name. The last word of the book is supposidly 'scar' so I don't think this will be in the name because it would be over used.

Harry Potter and Slytherins Locket?
Harry Potter and the Half Blood King? lol. perhaps not.
Harry Potter and the Veil of Mystery? thinking back to the vail Sirius fell through, and Luna saying she could hear them talking through it. I thought that would be resolved in book 6, but perhaps book 7 has a trip to the department of Mysteries for harry, which leads to...
Harry Potter and the Department of Mysteries.
ohh, Harry Potter and the Snake's Locket. THinking of Slytherin's locket, and Nagini being a Horcrux. I like how so much has to do with snakes at Hogwarts, the motto, the houses, and the dark lord nad harry speaking parsletongue. So harry potter and hte parsletongue battle sounds, ok?

The title you said is interesting. While it is quite obvious and I think Jo would never give us something that apparent, it is still interesting to think the trio will play a vital role in book 7.
