Remember Hagrid said not every witch or wizard that went into Slytherin turned out good, well Slughorn was in Slytherin right, and we don't know anything much about him, all i know is that he was a previous teacher at Hogwarts and he knows about Horcruxes. We don't know any background information on him, but then again he could turn out good in book 7. What do you think will happened to him, do you think he is good or bad..........

I think that he is good. True he is in Slytherin but not all Slytherins are evil. Slytherins want power; slughorn is a true slytherin because he does seek power, and he uses his connections and stuff but he isntn evil He is friends wiht DD and also he went into hiding before DD and Harry came and saw him because he didnt want the DE's to find him.

Slughorn is definately an interesting figure.

I definately think he is a good person over-all, but just has his own agenda on the side.

I would say he has the qualities of a Slytherin because of his ambition. I wouldn't exactly say power, more like just well connected for his own personal comfort rather than for pure power or influence. When I think of someone ambitious for power, I picture a Malfoy or Snape.

Actually what Hagrid said is that no other house had turned out dark wizards other than Slytherin. He didn't say that everyone in Slytherin is evil. As far as him knowing about Horcuxes, I'll be willing to bet that all of the other teachers at the school know about them, but they are just not taught at Hogwarts, so they are not mentioned by other teachers. Let's also not forget that Dumbledore recruited him, and I highly doubt that he would go out of his way to recruit a dark wizard to teach at the school. As far as I can tell, there is nothing to show that Slughorn is a bad person.

Slughorn isn't a bad person...he's just selfish. Like someone said above, he looks out for himself, and that's what makes him Slytherin. Besides, Dumbledore trusts him enough it seems, so, while I think he might try interfere with Harry too much, I think he's a decent enough character.

Hold on... Hagrid said in the first book that Slytherin is the only house to produce dark wizards, and when he said that he believed Sirius Black to be a dark wizard, but it was known that Sirius was in Gryffindor??? Am i making any sense?

I saw the same contradiction.

Here is what Hagrid said and I will quote... Page 80 in SS and starting last sentence of page 61 and top of 62 in PS.

'There's not a single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin. You-Know-Who was one.'

His statement is confusing.

I have one question.

Slughorn told Voldemort about Horcruxes while Voldemort was at Hogwarts. Why wouldn't Volemort attempt to kill Slughorn in fear that he, Slughorn, would tell others about Voldemorts interests in Horcruxes?

Also, Slughorn covers up his memory of his meeting with Tom Riddle. I don't think he covers it up because he is embarassed of what he did. I think that he did this so Dumbledore wouldn't know what Voldemort was up to.

If Slughorn were trying to stop Dumbledore from finding out what Voldemort was up to he probably wouldnt have given the memory to Harry so that he could defeat Voldemort....

Slughorn was drunk when he gave Harry the memory and he wasn't at his full state of mind. Harry nor Dumbledore were, in the past, able to convince Slughorn to give them the real memory. It just happens that he gave Harry the memory when he was drunk, plus Harry had used his felix felicious. Harry definately had the advantage over Slughorn in convincing him to give Harry the memory. Slughorn just seems kind of fishy, to me.

Although, in my opinion, Slughorn is a little creepy, I think he will turn out to be good. After all, he was a friend of DD's, and, except for Snape, all of DD's friends were good.

Yes there is more to Slughorn than we think.

I believe that Slughorn hid the memory because he was ashamed of what he had done. When LV returned from the dead, Slughorn remembered the conversation he had had with Tom Riddle (whom he knew to be LV) and put two and two together. He then was so ashamed that it was his fault that LV knew of horcruxes and what they did that he deliberately altered his memory to hide the fact that he had told him from himself and others. As to whether he is good or evil, I believe he is a jollier version of Snape - a man who is out for himself and no-one else - ie. a true Slytherin.

Slughorn does seem a bit evil to me, but maybe he just wants a comfortable life. Maybe that's why he went with DD.

As I said above, I don't think he is evil just selfish and self-centered. He is a Slytherin to the core - interested in himself and his own power and comfort. Just like Snape (only not quite so harsh about it). And as for all Slytherins being evil, that is not what Hagrid said - he said that all the evil wizards came from Slytherin not that all Slytherins were evil.

Slughorn is too interested in his own comfort, and a bit of a softy (his fondness for Lily and now Harry, for example). He is not evil, he is a coward and very selfish.

I do not think that Slughorn is good, i think him giving the memory about the horcruxwas: either a mistake because he was drunk, or helping harry get closer to lord voldy.He could be like snape

Again, Zola231, you make the assumption that Snape isn't "good"...

I think that the fact that Slughorn was drunk merely made him more susceptible to Harry's words - his fondness for Lily finally overcoming his embarrasment/self-preservation to make him give to Harry information that he needed to help defeat the killer of Lily.
