I have to agree about Hermoine. Harry has instinct, and courage, but smart...hmmm? I don't think I'd go that far.

If you think about it though...he may not be obviously smart, but in a true test he has the insticts and the courage to go with his knowledge...and its not let him down so far right? Plus Hermione's cleverness is from a book...thats not natural smartness, jus the ability to learn quickly!

I put Fred, but I wanted to put Fred and George. Come on guys. Its tough inventing new ways to gag, joke, and otherwise humiliate people and theirs were AWESOME. They have real life application to their magic. Plus the swamp was awesome in book five, what an exit!!!

I voted Hermione

- by was very close to choose either Fred or George instead. No doubt they are smart - they just don't stick as much to the rules

and they definetely don't care as much about school as Hermione does.

Hermione is the smartest of those in the vote. DD is of course the smartest out of all Gryffindors, but then again DD is the smartest wizard is all the world. To me, Harry is more cleaver and good at DADA. He doesn't know everything that Hermione does. She has a better memory. As for Fred and George, the seem very business smart, not book smart. (Not a bad thing.)

I voted for Hermione but I am going to have to disagree with you on her having common sense baty. Well, she does have some but sometimes it fails her. You have to admit that she has her moments of stupidity (her own special kind of stupidity mind you).
I also give Fred and George props because all of the stuff they came up with is genius (also there are many smart people who don't do well in school).
Harry I think is in between. Sometimes I think 'oh you are brilliant' and other times I think 'how could you be so stupid'

Well Hallie, it's ok to disagree with me about hermione, but I will also say that I feel the twins have no common sense. They tend to throw caution into the wind instead of thinking things out first. But then again, that is MY opinion.
Hermione thinks things out, but she is a teenager, and thus sometimes this gets in the way. But if she didn't have any common sense then her brain wouldn't kick in like it does, and she wouldn't have been able to get Harry, Ron and Herself out of some of the jams they have gotten into.
You can't *always* have common sense, but like you said 'she does have some,'and I feel at least as much or more then the group she hangs with.

You're right Baty, they really don't, but somehow it all manages to work out for them in the end. Well, actually I think they do have common sense but they don't listen to it because they couldn't care less.
And also I would like to point out that in the first book Ron had to point out to Hermione that she was a witch and didn't need wood to start a fire. I mean come on. hehehehe.

That is a great example CB and it is also funny. I also would like to add that following Harry and Ron out into the corridor trying to dissuade them from going to the midnight duel wasnt very smart either.
baty4potter
Jan 27 2005, 07:57 AM
Again, what little common sense RON may have doesn't match the skill of Hermione. Again, she has gotten them out of trouble and been able to think things through when both Harry and Ron were ready to jump right into things. I'll use the bit with the devils snare. She was able to use common sense to get them all out of trouble. Yes she is book smart, and that's why she knew it, but she had to be calm and use common sense to even think in a situation like that.
She gets reckless because she tends to follow the boys so to be in their crowd. This is were she sometimes doesn't have all the common sense.
Ron may be good at strategy, and he does have common sense *at times* but in my opinion he doesn't hold a candle to Hermione. We could go on for countless hours with this debate. But keep another thing in mind. Common sense tells Hermione that things need to be done, when Lazy Ron and Harry don't use what they have and let caution to the wind.
And CB, is your hearing going, or do I need to type in CAPS?
Hallie
Jan 27 2005, 10:38 AM
This is the last I will add on this but I just had to say that Hermione knowing what to do with the devils snare wasnt common sense, that was knowledge. The common sense part was that she didnt need wood to start a fire and I am most definately not questioning her intelligence. I fully give her props for knowing what to do. alright I'm done I will no longer say anything in the area of Hermione's common sense.
baty4potter
Jan 27 2005, 06:40 PM
I'll disagree again with you, and this will be my last post on the subject. Knowing what the devil snare is, is being book smart, but using common sense to relax and keep things under control is using her common sense in a stressful situation. You can be as book smart as you like and know all the spells, but if you can't use your common sense, and KNOW when to use it then being smart does you no good.
A's in college may get you a good job, but if you don't have the sense how to apply it you won't hold the job for very long.
ChimpBananers
Jan 27 2005, 07:06 PM
But having common sense in a way that allows you to think of possibilities to solve a problem in a crisis isn't enough if you don't know how to carry out the plan.
I'll use Hallie's example again for this...
"Devil's Snare, Devil's Snare...what did Professor Sprout say? -it likes the dark and the damp-"
(Harry comes up with the solution) "So light a fire!" Harry choked.
"Yes-of course-but there's no wood!" Hermionecried, wringing her hands. (How great is that? Forgeting something like that in a crisis?)
and then a few sentences later, after Hermione "checks in"...
"Lucky you pay attention in Herbology, Hermione," said Harry as he joined her by the wall, wiping sweat off his face.
"Yeah," said Ron, "and lucky Harry doesn't lose his head in a crisis-'ther's no wood,' honestly."
Yeah, Hermione sure does have loads of common sense....

Exactly, see had the 'brain smarts" to know about the Devil's snare, but how much common sense can she have if she can't relax and keep things under control? She forgot she was a witch!
baty4potter
Jan 27 2005, 07:16 PM
Forgetting doesn't mean you don't have common sense. She is young and is still honing her witches skills.
And Ron said good thing good think Harry doesn't lose his head in a crises? I believe it was Hermione who had enough sense to relax first and fell through the snare. And I believe it was Hermione who told *both* Harry and Ron to relax, which Harry did, and I believe it was Hermione who kept a cool head and was able to think things out and had the common sense to relax enough to be able to think of a way to use the light to get Ron out of trouble.
She isn't flawless, but for her age she has more Sense the MOST teenagers though Ron and Harry have lead her astray a few times. As Ron said.... I think we've been a bad influence on her. Not sure if that is an exact quote, but I think you have enough common sense to understand that.

Jan 27 2005, 07:43 PM

Hermione is the book-smartest, most definitely.
I think Fred and George are overall the smartest, because they made the headless hats. I mean c'mon, that is a sign of high intelligence, since something like an invisibility cloak is very rare. Plus they recognize that success isn't just following the rules, it's knowing what you want to do and doing it. That's genius!
