Forbes’ Celebrity 100 List Names Rowling and Radcliffe
|
Once again, J.K. Rowling is on the Celebrity 100 List created by Forbes Magazine. She is #9 within the Authors category:
It was wizardry that transformed J.K. Rowling from a destitute single mother on welfare into a best-selling billionaire. Her adventures of teenage magician Harry Potter and his classmates at Hogwarts became a children's literary sensation in 1998 with the U.S. publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It and the six subsequent books have now sold 375 million copies worldwide. The final one, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, has sold 44 million since it was published last July, including 15 million in the first 24 hours.
As #64 in the Actors category, Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) was also on the list:
Last summer the British-born boy wizard, 18, signed a jaw-dropping contract worth an estimated $50 million to continue his leading role in the last two installments of the Harry Potter series. (The final story, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, has since split into two movies, meaning even more cash for him.) He also played the title role in the BBC's TV movie My Boy Jack, a World War I story about Rudyard Kipling's ill-fated son, and he'll be baring all on Broadway in Equus.
Other well-known people on the list include Johnny Depp, Tom Clancy, Oprah, Madonna, and Simon Cowell.

Harry Potter Prequel Owner: Use Story for More Charity
|
The owner of the Harry Potter prequel story card, whom we have now learned is Hira Digpal, president of Tokyo-based investment-banking consulting company Red-33, would like to use the hand-written story for more charity.
Digpal, who originally had a closed bid of 50,000 pounds before halving his offer, said he faxed a letter to Rowling's publisher asking for the author's cooperation to use the story in a way that would raise more money for charity. He declined to give details of the proposal.
"Here I am, owning a piece of literary history," said Digpal in a phone interview from Tokyo. "I think I got a bargain. Hopefully, we can raise much more than the sale." |

According to a report on Bloomberg.com, the winning bid for Ms. Rowling's storycard was £25,000 ($48,855). It was made by an absentee bidder. The money will go to the two charities, English PEN and Dyslexia Action.
There were more than 100 guests, invitation-only. The auction was conducted by Sotheby's auctioneer Edward Rising. Other authors who had donated storycards were Sebastian Faulks, Richard Ford, Doris Lessing, Nick Hornby and Tom Stoppard.
