Book V, Order of the Phoenix, Update

Here's an article from The Leaky Cauldron that you should find interesting:

Thanks to Ali Wildgoose and DiagonAlley for a forward of an email from a friend of hers who works in the publishing industry. To quote the email, "[a]pparently she [JKR] is unhappy with two chapters, and is rewriting them and planning for an end of school term (in the UK) release."

Here's a copy of the email:

"I think I may have mentioned to you that my company prints all the HP books in the UK. Well we've been told to reserve all of april and may for an advance order of 2 million copies of HP5. Apparently AOL Time Warner Bros. wants JK to hold off the release until Xmas, to coincide with the next film release, but she has told them to piss right the hell off (not a direct quote). Apparently she is unhappy with two chapters (4 and 5?), and is rewriting them and planning for an end of school term (in the UK) release."

What's amusing here is the description of the film written on the back of the Potter disc. See for yourself...

Got that? Good, 'cause there's gonna be a quiz later. Dare you to say THAT three times fast.

YMCA Accused of Promoting Witchcraft from Ananova

A volunteer group is refusing to direct traffic at a YMCA triathlon because it claims the club promotes witchcraft by reading Harry Potter books to children.

Police Captain Robert Fichthorn said the eight-member force voted unanimously to boycott the 20th running of the triathlon, scheduled for September 7.

The Lancaster Family YMCA began reading chapters of the Harry Potter books to children enrolled in an after-school programme in November.

"I don't feel right taking our children's minds and teaching them (witchcraft)," Fichthorn said. "As long as we don't stand up, it won't stop. It's unfortunate that this is the way it has to be."

The YMCA's executive director, Michael Carr, said he was disappointed by the department's decision, but doesn't expect it to stop about 600 triathletes from participating in the race. Read more.

"I'm broke," Gerber admitted.

"A movie could transform my life."

This game uses the 3D engine technology seen in Unreal Tournament and offers players a chance to help Harry and his friends overcome similar challenges as found in the hugely popular book and motion picture.

Want to go on a Harry Potter Tour.  Here's Some Info . . .

From People

New York has its "Sex and the City" tour. New Jersey has its "The Sopranos" tour. Now England has its "Magical Medieval Tour," in which travelers are invited to follow in the footsteps of J.K. Rowling's popular creation, boy wizard Harry Potter. PEOPLE.com has received a flyer from Trafalgar Tours, which offers "a 10-day, fully escorted vacation through England highlighting all the places Harry Potter explored. Visit places such as the Kings Cross Station in London, the local train station in Goathland which was used in the movie for the Hoagsmeade Station, where the Hogwarts Express arrived, Alnwick Castle, where the broom-flying classes were filmed, and much more. By the end of this journey you will feel as if you were in the movie along with Harry." Feeling like Harry will cost the traveler $995 (with a supplemental charge of $365 for single travelers). The children's rate is $345, provided the youngster shares accommodations with his or her parents. And these rates are for the land portion only -- you must get to the London take-off point for the tour on your own broomstick. (Commercial air carriers are suggested for Muggles.) Some meals are extra, too, though there is, according to the brochure and the Trafalgar Web site, "a 'magical' farewell dinner." Only four such tours are available this year, with departure dates being June 22, July 6, July 13 and Aug. 10. And if this doesn't send the lightning bolt in your forehead flashing, then go to Paris.

Amazon has First Ever Profit, thanks, in part, to Harry Potter From The Scotsman

SOME said it never would, but Amazon.com defied its critics yesterday when it finally posted its first ever profit.

The figures, for the last quarter of 2001, of US$5 million (£3.5 million) marked a significant breakthrough for the online retailer, which has battled hard to survive in the harsh world of e-commerce following the dotcom crash last March.

Sales of DVD players and Harry Potter merchandise were among items that exceeded expectations.  Read more.

WHY WE CAN'T WAIT Despite an initial ho-hum reaction to its predecessor, ''Potter'' fans know that the two hours of setup in ''The Sorcerer's Stone'' will pay off with this one.

WHAT'S NEW Kenneth Branagh as Gilderoy Lockhart, Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts. (See, Shakespeare isn't the only author Branagh reads.) Oh, and there's that little matter of students turning to stone.

IN THEIR WORDS ''The first film was about introduction and discovery,'' says director Chris Columbus. ''The second is more of an adventure. It's a little darker, and it's a situation in which Harry is actually questioning his identity.''

NY Post on COS

Here's a peek at the next Harry Potter film - and it shows that the boy wizard is going to have a little competition in the love department.

"Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" features a dashing new character named Professor Gilderoy Lockhart.

The golden-haired Lockhart comes to the Hogwarts School to teach a class in "Defense Against the Dark Arts."

And Harry's pal Hermione promptly develops a crush on Lockhart, much to the teen's chagrin.

The professor will be played by handsome Shakespearean actor Kenneth Branagh, 41, whose past loves include Helena Bonham Carter and ex-wife Emma Thompson.

In the film, Lockhart has written books about his deadly battles with supernatural creatures. But despite his boorish boasting, many believe he is really a coward and a fraud.

Branagh joins the cast of the first film, which included young Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, as well as adult stars Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, John Cleese and Richard Harris.

Another new character will be Moaning Myrtle, a ghost who haunts the girls' bathroom.

"Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone," based on the book by J.K. Rowling, soared to No. 4 on the list of highest-grossing films of all time. It's already taken in $450 million worldwide.

The next film, which reportedly cost $140 million, is due out Nov. 15.

Potter No. 2 is a darker tale of good versus evil in which Harry returns for his second year at Hogwarts to find pupils mysteriously turning to stone.

Harry Potter Reaches $308m from CNN

In North American theatres, "Black Hawk Down," the grim depiction of an abortive U.S. military mission in Somalia, ended the four-week reign of the Hobbit epic "The Lord of the Rings," according to studio estimates issued Sunday.

The worldwide box office phenomenon "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (Warner Bros.) fell out of the top 10 in its 10th week of release, slipping two places to No. 12 with $2.5 million. With a North American tally of $308 million, it ranks No. 9 on the all-time list and should end up with about $320 million, said Dan Fellman, the distribution president at the AOL Time Warner Inc.-owned studio. Internationally, where the film is known in most territories as "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," the film's total is $560 million.  Read more.

He won't appear in the film but will help lighting and camera angles to be checked before filming takes place.

Richard told the Mail On Sunday: "I'm thrilled to be involved in the film. I can no longer race or ride through injury and illness and this is a great opportunity."

He rode nearly 900 winners in his 30-year career.

A Warners Brothers spokesman said: "We thought we might get a good response from Racing Post readers for obvious reasons."

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets is currently being filmed in the UK.

Harry Potter Drawings Fetching Large Sums from Guardian Unlimited

Thomas Taylor, the young graduate artist who decided what Harry Potter ought to look like, made only two or three hundred pounds for his first drawing of the boy hero in 1997. Now, five years after its publication, initial designs for the covers of J. K. Rowling's novels are worth tens of thousands.

The large sums changing hands have revitalised the market in children's book illustrations and established Potter first editions as more valuable to collectors than classics by Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë and Charles Dickens.  Read more.

The Magic of Potter from The Scotsman

IT is a measure of the success of the Harry Potter books that two companies reporting this week claim their link to the young wizard boosted their shares.

Argonaut, the computer games developer, claimed that Harry Potter’s current dominance of the computer games charts gave it confidence it would beat market expectations on its royalties.

The company said: "Our anecdotal evidence indicates the game has been a big hit all around the world. What will please shareholders more is the fact they have signed up for further gaming attachments to the forthcoming other Harry Potter adventures."

The company is making other acquisitions but it is the Potter link that seems to sprinkle magic.  Read more.

Jason Isaacs Talks of Being in COS from Empire Online

The thing about British actor Jason Isaacs is that he's just too nice. So much so, in fact, that it's almost impossible to reconcile him with some of the truly vile characters he's played on screen. After brutally murdering two of Mel Gibson's sons in as Colonel Tavington in The Patriot, one of the most impressively hateable villains to emerge in years, Isaacs has recently been in talks to play the dastardly Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets.

Are you kidding? I'd love to do it," he told us. "All of my godchildren have begged me, I swear to you every one of them phoned me and begged me to do it. "

But even someone with Isaac's villain experience might have his work cut out playing someone like Malfoy, a servant of 'You Know Who'. "He's not that bad is he? He couldn't possibly be worse than Tavington. Does he burn churches full of women and children? Actually I said to my godchildren 'why do you want me to be in this film if I'm playing that part?' but they insisted that it was Harry Potter. I said 'do you think the children of the guy who played the child-catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang were proud of him?' But they just want to be able to tell everyone I'm in Harry Potter. I don't know, I hope it happens but we'll see."

If there is justice in the universe then we're confident he'll get the part but, if so, will the dark-haired Isaacs don a wig to play the father of platinum-blonde Draco, or will he go the whole hog and break out the bleach? "Actually I'm trying to get the whole spectrum of hair covered," he muses. "I had a ponytail in The Patriot, I'm bald as an egg in Black Hawk Down, I had a lovely big red wig in Sweet November so I hope to go blonde next. It's all about the hair for me."  Read it all!!

Here are some words from The Digital Bits:

By the way... a number of sources are telling us that May 7th is the unofficial release date for Warner's Harry Potter on DVD (although a few sources are also saying April 30th) . . .

The Oklahoman reports on spirituality issues of Harry Potter and LOTR.

The cinematic quests of Frodo Baggins and Harry Potter also share an unusual amount of attention from religious leaders.

Partly, that's because the tales created by J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling are both deeply entangled with questions about spiritual values and ethics, choices and their consequences, and the nature and use of power.

And partly it's because of some Christians' aversion to any entertainment that portrays sorcery and magic.  Read the rest here!

The New York Times reports that with $6.1 million over the weekend, ``Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone'' edged past $300 million, the first movie since ``Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace'' to hit that level. ``Harry Potter'' also has climbed to No. 10 on the list of all-time top-grossing films domestically, knocking off ``The Sixth Sense.''

In a different article, The New York Times goes on the say that

The Harry Potter movie passed $800 million worldwide over the weekend and set a record for Warner Bros. Pictures in North America, said studio officials.

The family fantasy, known as ``Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone'' in the United States, has pulled in $300.6 million in North America since its Nov. 16 release, boosted by weekend sales of $6.1 million -- good enough for No. 9. The studio's previous record was $251 million for 1989's ``Batman.''

The film is known as ``Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'' in most international markets, where it has surpassed $500 million, said WB spokeswoman Barbara Brogliatti. Warner Bros. is also a unit of AOL Time Warner. A studio official had earlier estimated the film's foreign tally at $400 million.

"Harry and Me" with JK Rowling on BBC

The Shrieking Shack has some of the information on the "Harry and Me" show.  Here's a bit of it:

  • The character Hermione is based on JK Rowling when she was a child, mad on books and quite bossy.

  • JK says that a lot more people are going to die in the next few books, and one of the deaths will be horrible to re-write (she has already written it in rough).

  • In the 5th book there is meant to be more Boy and Girl stuff as Harry is 15 and his hormones are starting to kick in. We will be taking trips with Harry to many parts of the magical world that we have never seen before, and book will also tell us a lot more about Harry's past (maybe Dumbledore thinks it is time for him to tell Harry his secret).

  • the 7th book is all about everyone's lives when they leave and after they leave school, well about those who have survived…

Smith told www.usatoday.com she has already been involved in the filming of the second movie, Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets.

"It was as if one had never been away. The kids are there, all a bit bigger."

"I think the film will be great fun. Ken Branagh plays this rather glamorous teacher who comes in. I love the idea that the detention the children have to do after school if they've misbehaved is to answer all his fan mail."(link)

Flying school gave Harry a lift - Manchester Online

THE secret power behind Harry Potter’s flying broomstick can be revealed . . .

The boy wizard took to the skies in the blockbuster film thanks to giant motorised propellor packs provided by a Derbyshire flying school.

Student pilots with Buxton-based Airways use the paramotors during paraglider training sessions.

Airways modified two of the paramotors after Warner Brothers asked them to be sent to South Wales where filming took place. Chief flying instructor Paul Allmark said: ‘‘We were delighted to help when we were approached.

‘‘The paramotor units are highly portable and suited their requirments exactly. They were used to create the effect of the main character flying on a broomstick in a game of Quidditch.’’

He added: ‘‘Paramotoring is about as close to Quidditch as you can get without a broomstick — although I think we will be sticking to paragliding and hang-gliding for now.’’

The flying school attracts students from all over the country and transferred to larger premises in Buxton from the Hope Valley two years ago.
