Branagh
Still In The Directing Picture??
from This is London
Kenneth Branagh
is hotly tipped to direct the third
Harry Potter movie when current helmer
Christopher Columbus hangs up his wand
after finishing the current movie, Harry
Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Branagh,
who is also starring in the current
film as Professor Gilderoy Lockhart,
is one of three candidates in the frame
for the job, widely regarded as one
of the great directing gigs of the decade.
While negotiations
are far from complete, a source close
to Branagh says: "He would like
to do the job." A decision will
be reached over the next four weeks.
Branagh faces
competition from Mexican director Alfonso
Cuaron, whose CV includes the hit Y
Tu Mama Tambien (And Your Mother Too)
and the magical screen version of A
Little Princess, and Callie Khouri,
screenwriter of Thelma and Louise.
"When you're
not shooting, the schedule is still
heavy," says Columbus, "The
process has made me a better film-maker
and I am extremely open to the prospect
of directing the fourth in the series."
Meanwhile, the
decision about who will take over for
Harry Potter III (The Prisoner of Azkaban)
will be made in the next month by four
key people: Columbus himself, producer
David Heyman, JK Rowling and screenwriter
Steve Kloves.
"All of
these people you mention are in the
mix," confirmed David Heyman, "plus
a few others. We're looking for somebody
who embodies many qualities: to handle
kids and a project of this size and
to continue the magic that Chris has
brought to it."
"There isn't
just one single quality," adds
Columbus. "You have to have the
ability to handle actors - some of the
best actors of our generation are in
the films, but you also have to deal
with visual effects and these two things
rarely go hand in hand. I'm also looking
for someone who is not afraid of the
darkness and the humour."

Book
Five Release Date Still Uncertain
from The Times
HARRY
POTTER fans hoping for news about the
arrival of long-awaited fifth book in
the series were disappointed yesterday
after Bloomsbury, the schoolboy wizard’s
publisher, was unable to give a date.
The
company had indicated in March that
it hoped the book, to be called Harry
Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,
would appear later this year.
However,
Bloomsbury cheered shareholders at its
annual meeting saying it anticipated
another surge in sales of the first
four Harry Potter books when the second
Harry Potter film, The Chamber of
Secrets, is released in November.

Box
Office Record Possible Thanks, in Part,
to HP from Reuters
Talk
about boffo. The curtain rises on the
summer movie season's second half with
"Men In Black II" on July
3, and steep gains at U.S. box offices
already have Hollywood eying not only
a super summer but a record year with
over $9 billion in ticket sales.
If that figure
holds up, which is no Hollywood movie
fantasy, it would mark just over a 7
percent increase from 2001's record
total of $8.35 billion, the first time
that U.S. box office figures topped
$8 billion.
Some industry
watchers think ticket sales could hit
$10 billion after follow-ups to 2001
hits "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's

John
Williams Busy Mapping Out CoS Score
from the Boston Globe, thanks
to TLC
and harrypotterfreak
When
he talks about the movies, John Williams
still can't help grinning. In his 70th-birthday
season and with more than 90 film scores
behind him, he still enjoys composing
music, and when he talks about his work,
he's as happy as a kid at the popcorn
stand.
This summer,
Williams has contributed to two giant
productions in the theaters, ''Minority
Report'' and ''Star Wars: Episode II
- Attack of the Clones.'' When Williams
was in town a few weeks ago to conduct
the Boston Pops, he took a few minutes
off from his busy schedule to talk about
what he has been up to.
The Boston week
was a brief holiday from composing,
a stopover between London, where he
saw a rough cut of ''Harry Potter and
the Chamber of Secrets,'' and Los Angeles,
where he is now busy mapping out the
score. Williams will compose about 40
minutes of the music, including all
the new thematic material; William Ross
will develop the themes for the full
score. Read more!

Harry
Potter and CliffNotes from the
NYT
N the beginning,
there were only CliffsNotes, and they
reminded readers up front, in bold,
to READ THE ENTIRE LITERARY WORK, warning
that the notes were NOT INTENDED as
a substitute for the real thing.
But a new generation
of competitors to Cliffs doesn't bother
with such disclaimers, and even the
new, revised Cliffs have dropped their
bold threat.
Still,
let the reader beware: those who read
the notes instead of the book risk losing
something in the reduction, as a few
comparisons suggest.
From
"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's
Stone":
"You mean
he was there in the classroom with you?"
Harry gasped.
"He is with
me wherever I go," said Quirrell
quietly. "I met him when I traveled
around the world. A foolish young man
I was then, full of ridiculous ideas
about good and evil. Lord Voldemort
showed me how wrong I was. There is
no good and evil, there is only power,
and those too weak to see it. . . .
Since then, I
have served him faithfully, although
I have let him down many times. He has
had to be very hard on me." Quirrell
shivered suddenly. "He does not
forgive mistakes easily. When I failed
to steal the stone from Gringotts, he
was most displeased. He punished me
. . . decided he would have to keep
a closer watch on me. . . ."
From the SparkNotes:
The sentiments
Quirrell expressed underlie one of the
classic works of political theory, Niccolo
Machiavelli's "The Prince."
In this 16th-century work Machiavelli
wrote about how rulers should expand
their power with no regard for morality
or justice. . . . Quirrell's statement
also echoes the thought of 19th-century
German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche,
who argued that individual human will
and striving are more important and
relevant than morality and more impressive
than flimsy notions of right and wrong.
The ideas of these two philosophers
emphasize the individual at the expense
of the common good, and Voldemort embodies
their values. (Link)

Encryption
Codes Seemed to Have Vanished from
ZDNet
Like
most other film studios, Warner Bros.
includes anti-copying technology on
DVDs to prevent digital-to-digital recording,
for example, to a computer hard drive.
This is considered a crucial defense
against the looming "Napsterization"
of Hollywood, as high-speed Internet
connections and powerful video-compression
technology increasingly make it possible
for ordinary consumers to swap high-quality
versions of feature-length movies online.
A Warner Bros.
representative declined to comment when
asked whether the company had dropped
analog encryption from the "Harry
Potter" release, saying only that
it uses complete digital copy-protection
features on all its DVDs.
"We have
piracy deterrents on everything,"

2002 Chamber
of Secrets Trailer Details
My
great friend, DD, gave me a description
of the new "Chamber of Secrets"
trailer. Please keep in mind that
she does not know all the details of
Harry Potter that all of us fellow Potter
fans do, so for what she is unsure of
I will explain better in parenthesis.
Here it is:
There is a chase
scene in a little flying car that is
being driven by his red haired friend
(Ron) and they are trying to
escape the train (Hogwart's Express).
He is confronted by that blond haired
Malfoy kid who says, "Are you scared
Harry Potter?" and Harry says,
"You wish." The hamber
of secrets has a huge door on it with
locks that look like live snakes.
There is a scene where Harry is trying
to grab a jewel studded sword (The
Gryffindor Sword) and kind of holds
it up like young king Arthur.
There is also a huge hairy spider (Aragog).
It gives a flash of a few of the teachers
who are "very worried" about
the chamber of secrets because I think
they don't know what's in it?
There is a scene when Harry writes in
a big book (The Diary), "Do
you know anything about the Chamber
of Secrets?" the writing disappears
and a ghost (Tom Riddle) writes
"Yes".
Thanks, DD, for
the information! :-)

"Midges are ‘pool feeders’ where

why it’s so painful. They open up pools

3 Director Confusion
There
has been some confusion as to who will
be directing "Prisoner of Azkaban."
Recently, it was stated that Cuaron
was noted as the director on the IMDb
site. As I stated before, this
information is given to IMDb

Therefore, it was not confirmed.
The
Snitch is claiming that Sky News
has confirmed that Kenneth Branagh has
been confirmed as the director for POA.
Please
realize that this information is not
official until is comes straight from
WB. So, who knows???

get this new toy (the fifth Harry Potter

what has happened to writer J.K. Rowling

She helped shape the first of seven

many authors take at least two years

what the fuss is about. Read more

Video Breaking More Records from
Hollywood Variety
Harry Potter
cast his spell on the video world in
its first month of release, breaking
sales records from the United States
to Japan and in his home territory of
the U.K.
"Potter"
generated roughly $400 million in combined
video spending around the world in the
first three weeks, according to industry
estimates, which is believed to be a
record.
"Potter"
took an unusual route to the U.S., getting
released in almost every other country
first in order to get out in front of
the World Cup soccer tournament that
began this month, which tends to dominate
all media and consumer attention in
every country but the U.S. But Warner
Home Video still wanted to wait till
the summertime for its U.S. release.
Nearly 10 million
copies of the VHS and DVD versions of
last year's second biggest movie were
sold to consumers in the U.S. and Canada
in the first week of release since May
28, including more than a million copies
purchased by video stores to rent out,
Warner Home Video has confirmed.
That surpasses
the approximately nine million copies
of "Shrek" that were purchased
in the first week of that film's release
on video last fall, the previous record
in the era of DVD. But it is still only
about half of the 20 million copies
that Disney reported consumers had purchased
of "The Lion King" in the
first week of U.S. sales in 1995, all
of which were VHS. That amounted to
more than $450 million in spending.

Two
Hagrids, Peeves will be in CoS
From Guardian Unlimited
A hunt began
yesterday to identify an unknown, 8ft
actor with a barrel chest who looks
good in shaggy makeup. It was triggered
by a film executive who gave away what
is known in the trade as "Warner
Brothers' big secret" - how they
made Hagrid so big in the first Harry
Potter film.
Tanya Seghatchian,
co-producer of the Potter films, let
slip to an audience of children at the
Guardian Hay festival that "there
were two Hagrids and two sets. One Hagrid
was big, one small".
But, for the
children, her favourite revelation was
that Peeves, the incurably embittered
and resourceful poltergeist who was
dropped from Philosopher's Stone, has
been reprieved.
Bowing to child
protests, he has been included to wreak
his vengeance on Hogwarts castle in
the next film, Harry Potter and the
Chamber of Secrets.
Trying to justify
the omission, she said: "Peeves
will appear in future films. He was
not fundamental to the story."
Mr Florence asked whether that meant
Peeves's fellow-spectre Nearly Headless
Nick - who was in the first film - was
fundamental to the story? No, acknowledged
Ms Seghatchian gracefully "but
Nearly Headless Nick was John Cleese,
and we all love John Cleese more".

JK
Rowling Losing Interest? from
The Sunday Times, thanks to the Wizarding
World
I suppose
it had to happen. After knocking out four
bestselling Harry Potter books, author
JK Rowling seems to have lost interest
in her precocious boy wizard. Originally,
the intention was to produce seven volumes,
following young Harry through his days
at Hogwarts school for wizards.
It's
now two years since the last Harry Potter
book appeared and I am told that the
publishers are still awaiting the latest
manuscript. That means that it will
be almost a three-year interval between
books, which rather defeats the object
of the exercise. Read more.

Elaboration Necessary from The
Washington Post
The
Washington Post has an article in which
they are giving a list of books for
boys to read over the summer, and reasons
why they're recommended. Here's
what they had to say:
The Golden
Compass, by Philip Pullman (ages
12 and up). The first book in Pullman's
His Dark Materials trilogy is a complex
action fantasy adventure -- with a main
character who's a girl.
Captain Underpants
books , by Dav Pilkey (ages 6-12).Don't
resist them. Take them for what they
are -- goofy-young-guy humor with a
title that says it all.
The Harry
Potter books, by J.K. Rowling (ages
8 and up). No elaboration necessary.
The Hobbit
and The Lord of the Rings ,
by J.R.R. Tolkien (ages 8 and up). If
you haven't heard of these by now, maybe
your son is right. You do embarrass
him. Yes, there's a movie now, but boys
love the books.
A Series of
Unfortunate Events, by Lemony Snicket
(ages 10 and up). Fiendishly funny and
smart (see review on page 5).
