LA Times’ HP Collection of Photos, Interviews & Apps

Posted by Lilysowl On July - 28 - 2011

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 If you missed any of the Harry Potter photos, interviews, articles, and apps The Los Angeles Times had posted on their ‘Hero Complex’ webpage in anticipation of the theater release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 which occurred on July 15, all of them now are compiled in the current ‘Hero Complex’ feature on the newspaper’s website.  This includes a photo gallery of each of the three stars (Dan Radcliffe as “Harry”, Emma Watson as “Hermione”, and Rupert Grint as “Ron”) in the past ten years as they made all eight films; brief video interviews with the director David Yates, interview articles with other Harry Potter stars like Tom Felton (Draco), Matthew Lewis (Neville), and Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy) as well as the trio themselves.  There is even an article on Pottermore along with the special apps features “Find Your Personal Patronus” and “Parseltongue Translator Lets Muggles Hiss Like Slytherins”.

I enjoyed two of the video interviews with David Yates.  In one of them, he spoke highly of Alan Rickman as “Snape” and told a funny tidbit of how the actor couldn’t find his”mojo” when Yates blocked him on a slope in Half-Blood Prince.  In the other video, Yates described his first day on the Harry Potter set which was when Mike Newell was still directing Goblet of Fire.

Helen McCrory Regrets Joining HP Cast At The End

Posted by Lilysowl On July - 7 - 2011

Prior to appearing at the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 world premiere in a beautiful red gown with her actor husband Damian Lewis and viewing the last film, Helen McCrory spoke to Parade magazine about appearing in the last three Harry Potter films (Half-Blood Prince, Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2).  She especially notes how Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) was ”the ambassador to the embassy that you’re joining”, which was interesting since Ms. McCrory’s father was once a diplomat in foreign services.

Saying goodbye to Harry Potter.
“It’s sad that it’s coming to an end. I enjoyed it so much. I felt very welcomed as soon as I came on set by the crew and the cast alike — particularly by Daniel Radcliffe. You feel he’s the ambassador to the embassy that you’re joining. He really welcomes you on and introduces you to everybody and is a real gentleman. I made really good friends on set. I sort of knew Helena Bonham Carter before, but I’ve come away with a best friend in her. In a way, it won’t end, because we’ll all still keep in touch. But I’m sad it’s coming to an end, especially for people who started right at the beginning. Quite frankly, it was their lives, not just a film. It’s a shame that I joined it so late and Narcissa’s part is so fleeting. But however big or small, it’s been lovely to be a part of.”. . .

. . .McCrory was originally cast as Bellatrix in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix but had to drop out right before filming.
“That’s correct. But then I got pregnant with my first child, and insurance wouldn’t cover pregnant witches! It was lovely that they invited me back and wanted me to be a part of it somehow.”

Her favorite scene to film in Deathly Hallows: Part II.
“It has to be those huge battle scenes. It was quite extraordinary standing in a line with the cast in full makeup and the Death Eaters behind you and tons of extras. And then on top of that, you had all the fires and explosions and the stuntmen running around. It was fantastic to do 5-minute takes of battle scenes when you have the cameras charging around and Ralph Fiennes leading on one side and Daniel Radcliffe leading on the other. And the fight would continue and everybody would improvise and then you’d call cut. It was extraordinarily electrifying. I’ll never forget those 5 a.m. scenes in the midst of a cold winter morning in England.”…

If J.K. Rowling should ever, ever write another book about Harry’s world and it comes to the big screen, Helen McCrory would not hesitate to visit that world again.

McCrory Plays Unlikable Women But Directors Like Her

Posted by Lilysowl On June - 2 - 2010

Helen McCroryTo promote The Late Middle Classes by Simon Gray in which she appears as “Celia” at the Donmar Warehouse in London, Helen McCrory (Narcissa Malfoy) spoke with The Guardian whose article observed that directors favored her.  For example, David Yates (director of Order of Phoenix and Deathly Hallows) originally wanted her for the role of Bellatrix Lestrange; but she had to decline due to the pregnancy of her youngest child.  So instead, Yates cast her as Bellatrix’s sister and Draco Malfoy’s mother, Narcissa in Half-Blood Prince as well as in Deathly Hallows Part I and Part II

And the director of London’s revival of Rosmersholm by Ibsen, Anthony Page kept rescheduling the production around her due to her first pregnancy before theatergoers finally saw it onstage.  She even managed to impress the directors and producers of  the American television series Life which starred her husband Damien Lewis.  They gave her the recurring role of Amanda Puryer.

However, according to the article, motherhood now makes McCrory more selective about the roles she accepts:

“because each job is taking me away from my children, so I have to really believe that what that person has to say is relevant and interesting and entertaining.”

And yet, she hasn’t had to choose between working and parenting.  Her desire for acting comes from her father’s love of storytelling:

“There is a pride in his family in being the best storyteller, in looking at life and making little observations about it, to try and find some meaning, or just for the fun of it.” Acting appeals for the same reasons. “What interests me about life most is people, and the why of the world. That’s what theatre looks at: it examines life, and gives it a cohesiveness that life doesn’t have.”

The Late Middle Classes opened on May 27 and will run until July 17, 2010.

Helen McCrory: Deathly Hallows II Read Through Today

Posted by Dijares On October - 5 - 2009

Helen McCroryHelen McCrory, who portrays Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, was recently interviewed by Rotten Tomatoes and stated that the read through for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II script will take place today.  In the interview, she also talks about how the film will have an epic ending and that filming will finish in April.  She also talks about how in the last two films, director David Yates is concentrating on Harry becoming a man.

“It’s got a full stop,” she told us. “I think up to now, every director who has done a Harry Potter has had to do a dot-dot-dot. They know it’s a sequel, they know there’s another film coming out. But with this one, we can actually make everything have an epic ending. It’s going to be final. And it’s going to be huge. There doesn’t have to be any more pauses or dot-dot-dots. So they’re letting out all the stops with this one.”

We finish in April and it does feel different on set actually,” she explained. “Some people have been doing it for 10, 11 years. It’s part of their lives. So although I’ve just joined them at the end, a lot of people have a huge emotional commitment to it. There are children that have grown up with the people on the set, like the directors and the costume designers backstage. It’s a very big occasion for those people.”

“I think with these next two films, he’s looking at this character becoming a man. And that again, is quite an epic story. That’s Ulysses. Rites of passage. It’s exactly what Noel Clarke did, in a way, with Kidulthood. We still watch those stories, whether they’re set in Hogwarts or New Cross.”

McCrory told us she was due for a table read of the script for the second part of the film today. “You don’t know what to expect until you get there,” she said. “Something written down on paper could be completely different on the screen. On Monday we’re just going to sit down with various people around a table.”

Photos: McCrory (Narcissa Malfoy) At HBP UK Premiere

Posted by Lilysowl On July - 8 - 2009

Helen McCroryHelen’s Haven posted photos of Helen McCrory, who portrays “Narcissa Malfoy” in Harry Potter fans’ first glimpse of Draco Malfoy’s mother in Half-Blood Prince, at the UK premiere of the sixth film.  The actress was escorted by her husband Damian Lewis (known to American audiences for his NBC-TV series Life).  She wore black elbow-length gloves with a beautiful, long and tight-fitting gown that I believe the wife of Lucius Malfoy would want to have.  Since Mr. Lewis also wore black with a nice scarf, the couple does appear to belong in the “wizarding world of Harry Potter” (especially with the fact that Mr. Lewis has red hair. lol).
